Cultured Vultures

While the genre was pretty well established before the console came out, you could argue that the SNES was when RPGs really began to set creative standards that some RPGs of today just struggle to match.

Seeing Lufia 2 in any video makes me pretty happy.

Lufia 2 is so criminally underrated

FF4 at least deserved an honorary mention! And I know they were only released in Japan, but Tales of Phantasia and Secret of Mana 3 were absolute bangers!

FFVI is always my pick for the best SNES RPG (and best SNES game, and best RPG, and honestly my favorite game ever), but I always respect the Chrono Trigger/FFVI rivalry. Both are absolute masterpieces.

I'm 40. Had most of these games back in the day. Played all of them since. Excellent list 👏

What impresses me about Super Mario RPG is how complete of an RPG it feels, but can be beaten in 10-15 hours. So many games these days are so bloated with pointless content, tedious crafting, and anything else that makes games feel more like a chore than fun. It was refreshing to pick up the Switch remake and play a game that was exactly what it needed to be and nothing more.

Frog is one of my favorite characters of all time. He is so modest but knows when to be epic.

Illusion of Gaia. Such a brilliant and eerie game. Gave 8 year old me the creeps playing it back in the 90s. Wasn't quiet able to grasp the concept of nihilistic dread.

It is impressive how all of these games look! Jrpgs on snes were so ahead of its time!

The SNES has a truly superb library of RPGs, many of which never left Japan back then.

Seiken Densetsu III (now officially called Trials of Mana), Live A Live, Treasure of the Rudras, Far East of Eden Zero, Front Mission, Front Mission: Gun Hazard, Bahamut Lagoon, Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War, Energy Breaker, Star Ocean, Tales of Phantasia

Robotrek on SNES was one I had to get again as an adult, great play, and so many ways to customize your robots.

I had chrono trigger and secret of mana when i was around 5 years old as my first rpgs. As a kid i worshiped secret of manas sound track and i loved the battle system of chrono trigger.

Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen is named after two songs by Queen from their second album, Queen II. The game's title comes from the songs "Ogre Battle" and "The March of the Black Queen".
Explanation

The game's name and other references to Queen songs are a nod to Matsuno's admiration for the band.
Other Queen references in the game

The game's Rhyan Sea region is named after the song "Seven Seas of Rhye".
The game's second game, Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together, is named after Queen's song "Teo Torriatte (Let Us Cling Together)"

Illusion of Gaia was the second game. I actually didn't know there was a third until now.

7th saga, Secret of Evermore, Brainlord, Final Fantasy 2, Illusion of Gaia, Some of my favorite games from the SNES days, expanding on it a little games like Suikoden, Shadow Hearts, Wild Arms, Xenosaga and Xenogears. All amazing games.
