Very informative Brian. May I add an addendum the walk more slowly? One tip passed to me years ago was "look behind you". Sometimes what you see face on or sideways is not the same as the rear view, a tree is an obvious example

This is the best advice that you can give people getting involved in photography, good equipment doesn't make you a good photographer, it's important to use the proper equipment for anything that you do, but if you don't know how to use it properly and apply that knowledge when you are out creating images. Some people don't consider photography an art form, but if you lack creativity, they ability to read and use light to your advantage, your photos will definitely reflect that. Some people can study a camera manual and understand what every dial and button do but when it comes to photographing a subject, it all falls apart. People get so hung up with the technical aspects of photography using manual mode, shooting in raw and their photos suck because they never developed the photographers eye, they don't have the creative vision that is important to become a good photographer.

The best advice I got was to read camera's manual. I used the camera several years but after reading the manual, I opened to myself new possibilities

Good advice indeed. And I also love simple equipment, and yes I also spent alot of time with each camera I have. Light is life in pictures!! And yes it should be fun and making you feel happy!

Keep subject area tight. Do not over crowd.

It was how they looked at the word, you said.
Bingo!
The greatest free advice I can given anyone is to ask them to ask themselves, Why do I want to take photos?

Less than 1,000 ..

It's far more important to be Observant / See what is all around you ,

The camera isn't important, but a good lens is an absolute necessity.

Thank you again Brian,
Enjoyed that one again.

This the best video I like to forward to people who struggle being the best photographer with the best and most expensive equipment and the sharpest lenses.

Thank you!!

Some good, sound advice there Brian. Thanks.

Excellent advice Brian: the one thing that I have learnt over 65+ years of taking images was to slow down before pressing the shutter button, learn your camera & how it works for you & enjoy using it. That’s what film did, restricted to 24/36 shots on a roll made you decide whether to shoot or not. Digital is great but can be ‘too easy’ with all its new bells & whistles. Hope all well with you: always welcome to visit when ur ever back home.

Britains most successful portrait and product photographer answered this question. He said less than $1000. He said you can go straight into business with either a D700 or 5Dmk2 and 35 and 85mm prime lenses. He said that he became famous with both and it only took 3 years. Don McCullin shot 90% of his famous conflict shots with a Nikon F and a 28mm and 135mm lens. Probably the most famous portrait photographer today is Vincent Peters. He uses a Mamiya RZ67 and a 110mm Sekor lens. He only recently bought a well used Phase One 30mp back for it.

Lighting is the thing I wished I had spent some money on. A simple flash and soft box do wonders

Made the decision about a month ago, I am not going to buy anymore camera bodies. No more lenses either. I have 'arrested' my GAS problem. Make do with my three Olympus cameras and my six Zuiko lenses.
Have made a decision of my 'happy place' to do my photography. A seaside location -about twenty mins drive from my home, here in Melbourne. Concentrate on composition, lighting, and colours of yachts sails.
Brian you have just recapped my decisions
Thankyou. Your words make so much sense.
I'm 80 yo so walking slowly is a given !
Not buying an OM3 or a Pen. Nothing, Nowt, Nought, and Zero.

Man, I just love that Audi TT ragtop!! I do believe I could be a better photographer if I had one of those rides. I totally agree! I just got through using a Pen-f, and a 25 1.8 for a month, and then a 17 1.8 for the next month. I got killer images with both set ups. In fact, I am so satisfied that I passed up a Leica Q2 Monochrom at a steal because I honestly don't think it could improve on my work even though it is full frame with more pixels.
