At that time James's Dad had stage 4 kidney disease with just months to live because a donor hadnt been found. The lyric " im not your son etc" was what they used to say to each other ( both military) when James was deployed . Following the publicity of this video a distant cousin came forward and was a match and James' Dad had a successful kidney transplant and did well. Yes its his real Dad in the video which was taken in one take. with no rehersals. Afterwards the whole crew and musicians were crying and James's father said " why are you all cryng Im still here"

They took this in one take, and when they were through, the whole crew in the room was sobbing their eyes out - except James' dad, he looked around and said "What is wrong with you? I'm not dead yet!"

When you are a combat veteran (and probably have seen people die), you do not give up right until the end.

And it was right - due to the video, they found a distant relative that could donate a kidney that saved his life.

OH MY GOD!!!! I'M BAWLING😭 I have only ever heard him sing You're Beautiful. I know he has a great voice but HOLY COW!! Amazing

Most of James Blunt’s songs are about something personal that he went through. “The Girl That Never Was” is about his wife’s miscarriage, “No Bravery” is about his time in the Kosovo war, “Your Beautiful” is about a stalker & “The Greatest” is about emergency services during the Covid pandemic & how he’s going to raise his children during such an uncertain time

I didn't get to say "goodbye" to my dad. So whenever I hear this song, I wrap a "goodbye" up in all my love for my dad and send it out into the Universe. I do that because, I am sure, he's visiting other inhabited planets and having a beer with their inhabitants. But I still, so miss him. You know?

no matter how many times a see this video, it gets me everytime. I think we can understand or have dealt with this in our lives. God bless you if you have had a parent pass away.

A “eulogy” from son to his father. This is a true story of father and son. His father had a stage 4 kidney disease and he is dying. Listen to the lyrics. He did not lost his father. His father is still alive because one of the relative donate a kidney after watching this video and his father lived. That was his real father in the video. His father is alive now. When they finished recording, his father turned and asked why everyone was crying, he was still there. Both of them served the British Army.

I'm 65 and I lost my father 5 years ago. I could not properly care for or properly say goodbye to my father because of COVID and the distance that separated us. This song destroys me every time.

James had sent the lyrics to his father when he asked him if he'd do this video with him but at the time of this recording, it was the first time James had ever sang it to his father. Thanks for your reaction. Take care and be well. Peace.

This is the age old story of fathers and sons. It's rare to find a guy that doesn't truly feel this song.
Thanks for reacting to this and sharing it with us.

What gets me everytime is his Father comforting him gently still. ❤ I've read after the shoot there wasn't a dry eye in the room. 😂 His Dad said something like why is everyone crying I'm still here. ❤

The story behind the song is special...The song is for his father, the gentleman beside him. His father donated a kidney when younger and at the moment his only kidney was failing.

That just shows You're human. God bless you sir. From Texas

James is an incredible musician and songwriter, every song of his is very special. Glad you got to know him, thank you, sir.

Actually, anyone who wouldnt cry are jerks.

James blunt is so underrated as a musician. I've been listening to him for 20 years and he never lets me down. I recommend Beside You for something a bit more joyous. His song for Carrie Fisher, one of his best friends, Dark Thoughts is beautiful.... Especially the live piano version ❤

This song resonates massively with me.. At the time the song came out, I lost my dad first to dementia, then 5 months later lost him to the angels, three months later my mum rapidly went downhill and I lost her as well. she wanted to be with dad in spirit. men do cry.. we just suppress it in front of other people.

@ptyptypty3 4 months ago

Hey, I'm NOT crying.. YOU'RE CRYING!!

@AmyWaddington-i3y 1 year ago

That is his father in the video - thank goodness a relative came forward with a kidney to save his life. "The girl that never was" is another true story in James' life (another tear jerker) if your interested.
