I grew up in the 70's and 80's riding Honda dirt bikes and wrenching on and then driving my father's Italian car collection made up of 60's Alfa Romeos, Ferraris and Lancias. As an Orthopedic surgeon, I avoided street bikes after seeing the carnage that distracted cars drives can inflict. Despite that, a few years ago I bought a 1980 R80/7 that was garaged for 10+ years at an online estate sale listed as 'non-running". I changed the fluids and plugs, cleaned the carbs and points and had it running in under 2 hours. After a few trips around the neighborhood, I went through the bike rehabbing brakes, bearings, etc. This being the first German engineered machine for me, I was so impressed with the simplicity, robustness (if that's a word) and quality of materials. After 2 years and about 1000K miles I'm hooked. I'm now planning the next steps of fork/shock rebuild, electronic ignition conversion etc. Videos like this and the other online support is a god send, keep it coming!

Beautiful restoration! One of my bikes is an R80RT bought new in 1989, now got 170,000 miles on the clock, still reliable and going strong. Love the old Airheads!

Absolutely love this. So many old BMWs have been chopped up and generally arsed about, in contrast this takes the original and makes it sharper and cooler for the 2020s while maintaining the original form. As an owner of a similar-vintage and similar colour scheme Laverda 500 (nice tho' it is) hearing you say "it's so easy to get parts for it" makes me weep with envy...

A very good summary of BMW airheads. I have a 1974 R90S. There is a big difference between an airhead which simply runs and one which is properly set up.  When I bought mine it was all shiny but had sat un-ridden for years.  It was only when I got a specialist to go through it and replace or fettle the suspension, carbs, gearbox and final drive that I discovered just how well they can ride.  The interchangeability of parts means that there are many out there with parts that fit and look ok but don't work quite as intended. That may suit some owners, but if you don't know airheads, get a prospective buy checked out by someone who does.

You’re so right about these older bikes being able to keep going despite neglect or oversight on maintenance.
I remember doing a 5,000 mile trip a couple of years ago through the southwest in the US.
The bike would start without the choke on cold days. Unusual for my bike. Anyways, I kept riding. When I got back home I decided to give the bike a proper thorough cleaning. When I opened the air box to check on the filter, I found a rats nest all around it. So even with that restriction the bike ran just fine although a bit rich.

Absolutely beautiful bike!

In Australia, the R100CS came with wire spoked wheels, which was certainly better on badly surfaced roads and especially at speed on dirt roads.
The rear bevel drive for the R100CS was 2.9:1 as opposed to the 3:1 on the RS units. The difference was hardly noticeable, until you wished to stretch between fuel stops.
It looks like you are running the choke separately for each carbie, which is something I did on various flat twins over 40 something years.
The rear brake works very well if it is correctly set-up. The drum liner and shoe material are the same as what Porsche used in 1963 on their last drum braked racing machines. They will work day in and day out.
The idle on the 980cc twins is slightly rougher than the 898cc twins with constant velocity carbies, as for the pumper Dellortos on the 898 R90S, they are the roughest idling of any of the larger air cooled flat twins, but my R990S certainly had almost instant throttle response (by comparison) if the throttle was twisted extremely rapidly and a longish way. Doing that did suck fuel though.
The S seat is quite hard for long rides, as it was designed so you could slide from side to side for cornering, if that was your wish.
The bike has effortless cruising between 110 km/h through to around 170 km/h. Above 170 km/h you know it's working, still reasonable up to around 180 km/h but with only the bikini fairing the rider is getting a lot of wind. The Krauser high lift screen really lowers the amount the wind onto the rider and quite a few of those so called grumpy German riders have this screen, or at least the ones I rode in Germany with did.
My R100CS did 305,000 km's before I moved it on, which is about par for the course with these flat twins.

Great Bike. I have an R100RS and an R80, both 1980 heavy flywheel models which i prefer. I had a 1981 R100RS in the eighties and it stripped the clutch splines. A tad inconvenient. We used to do regular trips to France in the eighties. Fabulous contry for airheads. Very prone to white lining once the rear tyre is half worn. The further you ride them the better they get. We once did Clermont Ferrand and back in a weekend in the pouring rain. Great stuff.

Good to see you getting exposure here. Handling on my R100S was always dependent on the right tyres (I used metzeler back in the 80's) and technique. Get everything done before the corner, braking, down changes and then track around on a slightly positive throttle and do not touch the front brake otherwise it would stand up and want to go straight on. I've complimented your build on your own channel but it's worth saying again, it's a beautiful build.
