Labyrinth is a 1986 musical fantasy film directed by Jim Henson with George Lucas as executive producer. Based on conceptual designs by Brian Froud, the film was written by Terry Jones, and many of its characters are played by puppets produced by Jim Henson's Creature Shop. The film stars Jennifer Connelly as 16-year-old Sarah and David Bowie as Jareth, the Goblin King. In Labyrinth, Sarah embarks on a quest to reach the center of an enormous, otherworldly maze to rescue her infant half-brother Toby, whom she wished away to Jareth.

36:46 “Snap out of your David Bowie fantasy!” - many of us to ourselves after watching this movie

"She's played D&D for sure!" - If you look on the shelves in her room, you will indeed see the D&D blue box.

Labyrinth, Legend, Ladyhawke. All are must-see 80’s films.

Trivia: The owl at the beginning is the first use of CGI to create a realistic CGI animal in a feature film.

The picture on her mirror was her mother and the guy she left the family for. The guy was David Bowie.

The answer to, "Should I watch the Muppet movies?" Is always YES

Supposedly, The backstory for Sarah is that her real mother fell in love with someone else and left her. The man looks like David Bowie. That is what the Goblin King represents.

Between this and The Dark Crystal, it makes you wonder how effects crews could so easily have given up on puppetry.

The Muppets Christmas Carol is one of the best Christmas movies! A MUST see!

Your next 80’s dark fantasy should be Legend (1985), starring Tom Cruise and Tim Curry as Lord Darkness. That’s the best creature makeup in cinema IMO. I suggest watching the US release with the Tangerine Dream soundtrack for the ultimate 80’s vibes. There are (4) releases and I wish they combined the US TV release with the theatrical because there’s a much longer scene of Meg the swamp creature in the TV copy we recorded on VHS.

Labyrinth is my #1 favorite childhood film and soundtrack. I still put on this album to clean the house or rock out on a road trip. The imagination and creativity of the Jim Henson Creature Shop is incredible. I highly recommend watching the documentary on the making of the Labyrinth, it’s fun.

"Terrifying, but fun" describes the majority of 80's movies for children 😂 Fun reaction! Man, I miss Bowie 💜

You can tell that David Bowie was having an absolute blast and the time of his life doing this movie

Toby was played by Toby Froud, son of Brian and Wendy Froud. Brian is a famous artist and creature designer who did many of the designs for the film. Wendy is a sculptor and doll maker who (among many other things) was the person who built the original Yoda puppet as well as fabricating creatures for this and for Dark Crystal. Toby himself is now a filmmaker and puppeteer.

The imagination that wrote this is actually Terry Jones of Monty Python fame.

The room the helping hands drop Sarah into is called an ouibliette. Hoggle says it's a place to forget about people. The word " ouibliette " is French for " to forget ".

Late to the party, but I love the symbolism of the junk lady... letting things become more important than people becomes a burden.
And our favorite part as kids was the fart sounds when Sir Didymus crosses the bog! 😂

Some fun trivia: Christopher Malcolm, who played Sarah's father, originated the role of Brad Majors in the Rocky Horror Show in the London cast, and appears briefly in it's sequel Shock Treatment. He also rescued Luke Skywalker from the planet Hoth in Empire Strikes Back, and was also in the movie Highlander which came out the same year as Labrynth. He is probably best known for his role in the comedy show Absolutely Fabulous as Saffy's dad, Justin.
