Learning how to mix can feel completely overwhelming - especially when you're starting out and there are endless options and endless videos telling you different approaches. But the mixing fundamentals come down to a hierarchy, and once you understand what matters most, mixing gets intuitive. When it gets intuitive, it gets easier.
This is a guide to mixing for beginners and anyone who's been at it a while and still isn't getting the results they want. I walk through the five stages of the mixing hierarchy: fader balance (your static mix), EQ, compression, effects, and automation. Plus a bonus tool that most people reach for way too early and can accidentally make your mix worse.

This is very similar to my mixing workflow. I do faders > low end eq on everything except the drums and bass (this gives clarity instantly) > some compression on every instrument (makes the beat more cohesive) > precise eq on everything (cutting and boosting) and also eq to make things fit together > fx > some automation > master
For mastering I just do very slight eq > some compression > some saturation > limiter to get it loud
I do saturation in the mastering phase because I think it’s much better that way.
