A lot of times I’ll check where the snare is sitting in the mix and make sure the vocal sits a bit on top of that. Two important elements in a modern production.

before even reaching for a compressor it's really helpful to use clip gain to bring down the signal on individual sounds or words that are poking out a ton so that the compressor doesn't have to work as hard

I remember Bob Clearmountain saying he matches the vocal volume with the snare

I appreciate your knowledge and time.

These specific techniques are very helpful.

this song is catchy and kind of hits different 😂

I like to send all my instruments to an instrument bus then put the “waves Curves Resolve plug in on the instrument bus and side chain the vocals to it. The plug in allows me to bring the vocals forward in the mix 🤘😝

My mentor, Ron Capone (look him up), taught me that the vocal should be 3-4 db above the music. Thing is, back then, we didn’t have the metering we have today—we had to do it with our ears.

That's something I have learned today

Awesome and super useful video as usual! You really are a great communicator/teacher!

great way to showcase how the thought process behind compression and layering.

Excellent!  The part about compression is a master class all to itself.  The remainder is entirely helpful.  I’ve been struggling and reading seemingly contradictory information.  This all makes sense and is as practical as can be.  And I gotta say, Colin, you have the gift of making audio concepts understandable (much like SynAudCon) and you are articlulate.  No slang, no modernspeak, just plain English.  Thank you for your work to further the understanding of audio concepts, fundamental as well as advanced.

Colin can pack a lot into 14 minutes - and as ever, it's all well thought through practical assistance, and explained with great clarity. Thanks.

Hey man really enjoying all your content it’s helping me heaps

These tutorials are so helpful!!

Yep.

Yep! Great content.

AMAZING ADVICE

Thanks again for another great video. I like to use the gain plugin for my volume automation. I place it last in the chain. That way, I can still adjust the overall volume of the track with the fader if I need to.
