This video is hilarious because the whole thing seems to be building up to djinngate but djinngate is like the most tame thing you mention

Just eat his second Djinn and ask for a deck check

"Patrick Hoban's career starts the same way a lot of yugioh players do. He first grew up in florida. At least until his mom's job forced the family to relocate. A new school in third grade. Two in fourth. Three more in fifth."

Man you have weird assumptions about yugioh players

Small critique, but would really be better viewing if the music was either quieter or didn't have lyrics.

Theres just some sections where old footage is being shown with audio and its just completely drowned out by the music or the dialog is overlapped w/ the lyrics of the song and neither are understandable.

Outside of that, first time viewer here and really enjoyed the deep dive!

Maybe if he'd not written that psychopathic shit about getting into an argument with his girlfriend I'd be more willing to buy the whole "he was actually a super nice dude the whole time, the internet was just so mean to him >_<" bullshit.

Gonna watch it with ads purely because you hired a real artist for the thumbnail. Thank you

My first experience with the guy was him wishing ☠️ on one of my local store owners grandma for them hosting a tourney in 2020. Then i found out the rest of his past.....this is not a "nice guy"

There is a very substantive difference between deception within an agreed-upon game of deception, and underhanded manipulation outside of an agreed-upon game.

In the case of Yu-Gi-Oh, players enter into the game, understanding that there is an element of deception and bluffing that is part of the game. A player can set a spell card, but do so in such a way to make it look like a trap. A player can act like they have a hand-trap ready, when actually they have bricked. All of these are understood, agreed-upon examples of deception that are simply part of the game, and, so long as they don’t break the rules (such as setting a copy of Infernity Avenger in the Spell/Trap zone just to empty your hand) then there is nothing wrong with that.

But if a player manipulates people outside the agreed-upon game of deception in order to gain advantage, that’s when it becomes a problem.

For example, in Among Us, players are expected to lie about who is and is not the imposter. Gaslighting other players is the name of the game and it’s all done in good fun because everyone entering into the game knows what they’re getting into.

However, if a player says to an Among Us host, “Hey, I’m unfamiliar with the airship map, could we please just stick to the original three maps?” and the host says, “Sure thing, buddy, we’ll just stick with those three maps,” then it would be utterly scummy of that host to then load up the airship map just to get an advantage over that player. In such a scenario, it would do that host no good to say, “Why are you upset that I lied to you?! Lying is what Among Us is all about!” because in that case, there was no mutual understanding that a game of deception was taking place. It was simply lying, breaking a promise, and taking advantage of someone in a context where good faith is expected.

I think may favorite story about Hoban is when he did a podcast years after his time playing Yugioh and basically said that he would go to small regionals before any big tournament and try to top with mediocre decks because he knew people would just copy his decks and felt like it would give him an easier time at the big tournament lol

I'm sorry the whole book seems so manipulative that taking any of the "nice guy" comments from people "close" to him seriously is impossible. They were probably manipulated into feeling like that too. It's probably more along the lines of "I'm not a psychopath, I'm a high-functioning sociopath". Djinngate is completely fine, gentleman's agreements is debatable issue, but the way you "let your girlfriend win silly arguments so that they don't realize how much of an ass you are" of it all is ridiculous to ignore and brush over.

Bro has straight sociopathic ideas on how to talk to people wth. Get in a random argument with the gf that you don’t care about then back down so she would later potentially? That’s insanely manipulative!

I frankly refuse to give credit to a guy doing low-level abuse tactics to his girlfriend? Like, the video is good, but that last three minutes feels pretty gross when considering that he's obviously not like that in his personal life. I have no horse in this race, but I hope he's changed.

NGl... the amount of Drama we create as weebs sometimes gives my sister right
"When there is no problems we create them"

22:06 Man…what a young Cimoooo…

I like how the community cares more about the dude playing the game and not writing a book about how he manipulated his gf.

The twist isn't really a twist. His friends trying to salvage his reputation when being a "nice guy" is the most important part of getting people to do what you want. Especially when you have a pwrsonality and reputation to use as social pressure.

The whole book about manipulating his girlfriend kinda makes me question the people saying he was a good dude. Was he a good dude, or did he just want you to think he was?

But moreover, this sort of thing is really why I hate competitive games in general. It's about winning, there's no room for respect when it comes down to the wire, and that's just such a toxic environment

anyone else feel weird about the "he's a nice guy" ending, especially after he literally wrote guides on how to manipulate your girlfriend??

Met him in Toronto, not a good dude his frinds claim him to be. He is kind of like the cliche high school jock bully, who bullies people, but his jock teammates think he is great.

Bro I haven't played this game in like 20 years, idk why I watch these or why they entertain me so much. Good job with your handling of events though; this stuff was crazy engrossing.
