When people ask how or why fish don't retreat from the pools. Imagine there's no such thing as water in your life. You're just surrounded by breathable air. No matter where you go, you'll always be able to breathe, and you've never known a place you couldn't. Now all the sudden you're in a weirdly heavy pocket of area and you just start getting tired. Then you pass out. Then you die. They have no reason to think the pool is dangerous.

Hydrogen sulfide is about as toxic as hydrogen cyanide. It just smells really bad as a warning, so people avoid it before lethal concentration is reached, and hence it is useless as a chemical weapon.

Kinda reminds me of people dropping dead in sulphur or other hazardous gas pits in confined spaces. No one even sees it coming and they just pass out for good.

I think it's important to understand that the hypersalinity itself is not dangerous to humans, as our skins are water- and salt-proof, unlike creatures with gills.  So, assuming that both the pressure at depth and temperature were tolerable, a diver in scuba gear (and sealed goggles) would be just fine swimming in a brine pool....that's also assuming they had lead weights weighing them down, as well, since the brine would be so dense an unweighted diver would have difficulty penetrating the surface.  This is born out by the fact that folks swim (more like float about aimlessly because of the density) in the Dead Sea all the time, usually in nothing more than trunks and tight goggles, and suffer no ill effect.
