In Turkish culture, we have a tradition called 'Hayır' (doing a good deed for charity). We make and distribute 'Lokma' (sweet fried dough) to everyone for free, expecting nothing but blessings in return. It’s a beautiful part of our culture."

I lived in Istanbul for almost 3 years, from 2012 to 2015. Because of my job, I was almost every day in a different area or discovering a new place in the city. Honestly, I spent all that time exploring Istanbul and still felt like I hadn’t seen everything. Every single day there was something new to discover.

What always amazed me was that whenever I visited a beautiful place, I would think: “This must be one of the most beautiful spots in Istanbul.” But somehow, the city always surprised me with places even more stunning than what I had already seen.

It honestly makes me sad to say that all the places shown in this video probably don’t even represent 1% of the beautiful places Istanbul has to offer. This city is truly massive. I have never seen anything like it in my life.

Lokma is free. Someone pays the lokma vendor as a charitable act and the vendor distributes it to people

About the donuts you got for free: they’re called lokma. She didn’t give them to you because they were leftovers, but in memory of someone who passed away. In our culture, people hand out lokma and ask others to pray for the soul of the deceased.

Distributing sweets in memory of a deceased person is completely traditional. Throughout the day, different people pay for sweets to be distributed in memory of their deceased loved ones, and this happens constantly.

I lived in Istanbul for 4 years, and even I still don’t think I’ve seen everywhere 😂

And don’t get me wrong, but whenever a movie or TV series is made in the West about Turkey, they instantly add that yellow filter, play Arabic music in the background, and show men with beards down to their waists. The whole world thinks we ride camels here. Even in the movie Taken 2, although the story takes place in modern times, they used cars that we used back in the 1980s — of course again with that yellow filter. Because of these kinds of portrayals, people even hesitate to visit places like this. It’s sad 💔 and pathetic. I truly appreciate people like you who share the reality with the world in an honest and unbiased way.

West should take notes on this video. This is the real Istanbul not like yellow desert. It is blue, green vibrant colorful. Glad you guys like this part of İstanbul. Recommended to go to Etiler district as well for green and fancy cafes :)

I'm over 30 and I've been saying this for years. Tourists don't see the the real İstanbul. They just walk around in Eminönü area and go back to their hometowns, thinking it's the end of the story. It's not. İstanbul is much much bigger. You'll find better scenes and better food in separate areas that are not remotely connected to Eminönü. Finally a foreign vlogger who shows other districts.

There is so much more to see. I once took my cousin out for a full city tour, it took 30 days and we weren't done.

Recently, a controversial TV series emerged. A series named 'Fuze' had caused a debate. They put a yellow filter on the scenes of the series set in Istanbul. This is something that has been around in the cinema industry for 20-30 years; they make the atmosphere in Turkey look like a Middle Eastern atmosphere and put a yellow filter everywhere. I hope this blue look, the look in this scene 19:26 , has given an idea to film producers in Hollywood or Western Europe. Because this issue is truly a sore point for us Turks, and I wanted to share it with you.

Actually, they didn’t give out those donuts just because it was the end of the day. It’s a Turkish tradition called "Hayır Lokması" (charity fried dough).

Whenever someone has a wish come true, wants to celebrate a newborn, or wants to honor a deceased loved one, they hire a food truck to fry and distribute these sweet dough balls to the public for free as an act of charity (hayır).

So, someone essentially pre-paid for all those treats as a good deed!

You said, "Why nobody show this side"... Here is a social experiment for you: When you are back in your home country, find a few Armenians and ask them about Istanbul, pretending you have never been in Turkiye. They will say that 'It is dirty and the people are rude, and you can't even drink a glass of beer in that Muslim country'!! And, if you spend a little more time with them they would introduce themselves as "From Armenia, the first Christian country in the world"!!
