Late in November 1944, after the Battle of Leyte Gulf, Vice Admiral Takeo Kurita’s force was moving north through the Formosa Strait, with Kongo, Yamato, and Nagato heading for Japan for repairs and destroyers screening them in darkness and worsening seas. American submarines had already been pushed into the route, and USS Sealion was waiting ahead as the Japanese column reduced zigzagging and pressed on at 16 knots...

Sealion's crew had a audio recording of it's attack on the Japanese fleet and the recording is preserved in at the us naval Institute were you can hear it

With the sinking of Kongō and Asahi, the American submarines sank more British-built battleships at sea in WW2 than Germany’s U-Boats.

There is a tape recording at youtube from the USS Sealion which is of very poor quality but is probably the only such recording preserved of a ww2 submarine attack against and enemy battleship

The routing of Kongo for the Battle of Leyte Gulf was wrong on the map. She went through the San Bernardino Strait (which was on the northern side of Leyte) and fought in the Battle off Samar against Taffy 3 and then withdrew through San Bernardino Strait. Fuso and Yamashiro went through Surigao Strait, south of Leyte, and were destroyed. No force went into battle using the route indicated.

Radar, torpedoes that WORKED, and aggressive submariner leadership were paying off in late 1944. Yet, bagging a BB and DD with one spread of torpedoes in this instance was just good shooting. The destroyer screens were thin and pitiful. The IJN was cooked.

I have played several subsim PC games and come across the Kongo, and especially at night...you can INSTANTLY tell the difference between a BC/BB and ANYTHING else when you get it into the periscope! >>>many times it would appear on radar several min before the smaller escorts, even though the DDs may be thousands of yards closer. It is always a tense run-in when you get a big capital ship in your scope. Can only imagine the tension on the bridge of Sealion.

And built by Vickers Shipbuilding Company, Barrow in Furness England. The same company that built the Battle Ship Mikasa, preserved in Tokyo Harbour. Which was the Japanese Flagship at the Battle of Tsushima.
