I hate when they always talk down "Licensed To Ill" It will always be a super fun party album. Fun the whole way through. Nothing to be embarrassed or ashamed of. There is nothing wrong with putting a smile on someones face as they have a drink with friends or sing a long with a catchy silly song while driving.
The boys are still relevant in 26. I'm 64 and my niece told me when she thinks of me the Beasties and the Grateful Dead are in the thought as well. I'll take that legacy.
I am from Manhattan as were they. We all took a test as 12 yr olds to see if we could get into Specialized High School. The three scored at the top and they went to Stuyvesent H.S. - where they met. The smartest in NYC
I find it fascinating that the "boys" originally had a girl. Graduating in 1987 we had a senior show done every year, part done by the "teachers" (very bland and old school) and parts done by the students. My friend and I loved the Beasties but we needed a third person. One person stepped forward, a girl. She would be Mike D. I made her the medallion out of cardboard and tinfoil, she provided the hat and shades. At the last minute she almost chickened out. But we did it. A version of The New Style. I was Ad Rock, my boy MCA. One of my greatest memories. Love these guys. RIP MCA we love you.
License To Ill wasn't a joke to me when I was a freshman in high school in 1986. It was the start of a journey and it just progressed from there. I saw my first show with the Beasties and Public Enemy in 1987 at the Spectrum in Philly and I saw them 6 more times after that. Every single time they blew me away. Some of the best shows I've ever had the privilege to attend! #STUPIDFRESH
Thing is about them is they changed styles in the 90s when they did pauls it hands down was ahead of there time check your head had the skater punk rap feel and the rest of us caught up to them. They set tons and style like no other hip hop group besides Wu tang on the rap front but being absolutely locked in like they did in the 90s was crazy every girl I dated and knew had huge crushes on them lol . I saw them 11 times live yo but the best was in California where I saw them on a private stage for someone birthday still seems like a dream seeing them with like 100 people
I was blessed as a natural night owl to hear many cutting edge music on my local Boston radio stations. Either the Brandeis College WERS or the big dog Rock station WBCN. late at night I heard both Cookie Puss and the Prodigy's Dirt Chamber sessions. I have both if you're interested. Later I explored more early Beasties. Rock Hard and She's On It. amazing before Liscened to Ill?!
