I grew up a few houses up from Jack Dempseys house on Lincoln & 48th in Murray Utah. I was lucky to meet him as a child in the 80s. I was with my grandfather driving home when he suddenly slammed on the breaks and said "its him!" he quickly backed up & pulled into the driveway. Jack Dempsey was in the front yard with his daughter watering the plants. As soon as his daughter saw us she said "No, he does not like to be bothered, youll have to go" My grandfather said "Please I just want my grandson to meet him" She kindly continued to insist that we leave. Just than Mr. Jack Dempsey walked up to us and told his daughter that it was okay..My grandfather told him "I just wanted my grandson to shake hands with the Champ" and jokingly precided to tell him that I was quite the fighter. Jack Dempsey replied "Oh he is is he?" We shook hands and went on our way. I had never seen my grandfather so excited. I am thankful that my grandfather did that for me. I always treasure the memory.
I remember it like it was yesterday when Jack Dempsey passed away because he passed away on the very same night (5/31/83) my Philadelphia 76ers (led by Julius "Dr. J" Erving, Moses Malone, Maurice Cheeks, Bobby Jones, Andrew Toney, and Marc Iavaroni) won the NBA title from the Los Angeles Lakers:-)!!!!
Jack Dempsey is truly amazing ! Great fighter, a warrior in the ring and such an intelligent person and a gentleman outside the ring...this was the time of real men with pride, honor and heart !
Shout out to Tommy Gibbons, an often forgotten but all-time great light heavyweight who also managed to beat Harry Greb. He held in there, with the occasional good movement and survived, one of very few to survive a full 15 from Jack
As for Jack himself, his first round knockout percentage (RO1 KOs making up 51% of his victories) remains unbeaten by any champion of any division in boxing history. Man was a legend.
not the size of the dog--the fight in the dog! dempsey was a hungry fighter with lots of heart. a murderous puncher with one route--forward. a true gentleman outside the ring. but tuff as iron back in the mining days. a true fighter.
