Dubai already operates the busiest international airport on Earth. Now it is preparing to leave it behind.

In this aviation documentary, we explore Dubai’s extraordinary $35 billion plan to transform Al Maktoum International Airport into the largest airport in the world — with five parallel runways, hundreds of aircraft stands, and eventual capacity for more than 260 million passengers per year.

But this mega-project has a complicated history. The airport expansion was started, delayed, and left stalled in the desert before Dubai revived its ambitions on an unprecedented scale.

We follow the rise of Dubai International from a compacted sand runway in 1960 to a record 95.2 million passengers in 2025, and examine why its success has created a problem: there is simply not enough room left to grow.

With Emirates expected to eventually relocate, billions being invested in Dubai South, and new aviation competition emerging across the Gulf, Dubai is making one of the biggest infrastructure bets in aviation history.

Will Al Maktoum secure Dubai’s dominance for decades — or become an airport too big to fill?
