Editor Updates:
- After Firmware the S1ii is rock SOLID when it comes to overheating and had zero issues in my testings now
- S5iiX has 14+ stops of DR not 12 🤪

I used my s5ii this weekend and it was hot as hell down here in Texas!!!! For theee hours no over heating shooting 6k

Yeah but the iso ? Is there really a difference in high iso low light for photography?

I have the original S5 I and the S5IIX

My video needs are for a YouTube talking head studio videos so being able to shoot 6K 30p Open Gate with the Lumix S5IIX and be able to crop for different social media platforms is great.

The fact that I can use it in the sun when I travel and go to social dance festivals without worrying about overheating is the cherry on top.

The S1II is great for video professionals but there is nothing I NEED for my YouTube needs.

I do like the skin tones on the S1II a bit better but with so many LUTs available this is an easy fix for non-video professionals.

It makes sense that direct sunlight will heat it up quicker than just ambient temps heating it up.

Reliability > fancy specs. S5IIX won't overheat, can't say the same about S1II. I would choose S5IIX every single time.

This video was way hard to work out what camera you were referring to

Let's just say this I wanted to shoot open gate with my S5 2x I had to carry around an card attached to my camera. The fact that the S1ii does it internally was enormous. Along with the tilt screen and separated camera and video functions on the dial. Tbh most of the upgrades that make this camera a big consideration function based.

Everything on my channel was recorded with the S5IIX, and it's great. Only a hard-core videographer would have any issues with how it looks. It's just a good-looking image, and it has lots of options. So when it comes to image, I don't see any real benefits from switching, but there are a lot of workflow differences that you did a wonderful job of talking about in this video. I will eventually transition to the S1II myself, but money-wise, I need to sell my S9 and S5IIX first. But I am also in no hurry; I am very happy with the S5IIX. There is also an argument that could be made that you can buy 2 of the S5IIX's for the price of the S1II, for a lot of people that will be the move to make. Great video, Mathew; as always, you are killing it!

I have the Lumix S5iiX, and it hasn't shut down due to overheating. I usually record on an SSD. It's my workhorse, and I've recorded at 6k Open Gate. And I've occasionally recorded in Apple ProRes.

Dang, they really should have included 32bit float internal recording on the S1ii. Maybe the next series of cameras will include it. That's one of the selling points of the new Nikon, but I've seen a bunch of videos complaining about that camera. I currently have a Lumix S5ii and considering buying a Lumix S1ii. Thanks for making this video. Very helpful.

It all depends. I own the S5ii, and frankly I am probably going to add the S1II later. Main reason is the 50fps crop on the S5ii. Its just a hassle to change lenses all the time.

@Raima888s 1 year ago

S5iiX does more than what I need for youtube in a controlled studio environment.

@Kevlexicon 1 year ago

great comparison. some sexay features on the s1 ii no doubt, but glad to see s5iix get the love it deserves. ive always seen it as an fx3 for half the price. i own an fx3 too but tbh i feel more excited to shoot w the s5iix. theyre both amazing but i jus like the layout and operation of the s5iix more, and some of the features, like the stabe and easy external ssd recording over the fx3's limitations there

I'm rocking with the S1ii, was thinking about returning when I heard about the overheating but after shooting a client project for a full day, I had no issues. I'm keeping this beast. If I ever need to shoot in direct sunlight , I would get an umbrella.

@wojciechczupta 1 year ago

great material. thank you. as to overheating the same pattern with G9ii - put it in direct sunlight and it will overheat after an hour (5.8k open gate), while S5ii is unshakable in the same conditions.

Thanks for helping me decide

Great comparison and appreciate your honesty on these 2. I'm on the BMCC which means I'm no on L-mount. I've been looking for a smaller camera to go handheld or on a gimbal. My only drawback on getting the S1ii is having to use an external drive and the file formats.
