In the coffee-growing mountains of El Salvador, there's a little-known trade that provides daily sustenance for many families: that of the woodcutters.

This time, we traveled to the department of Ahuachapán, in the district of Ataco, on the road leading to downtown Ahuachapán, to learn more about the lives of a couple who cut and transport firewood: Don Mauricio and Doña Sonia.

We'll accompany this couple to discover what it's really like to work in the mountains, how difficult it is to cut firewood, how much they can earn, and what risks they face daily.

One of the most striking things is how they transport the firewood. They use a handcrafted wheelbarrow, which they load with the wood and then push, taking advantage of the momentum of the road's slopes. When the slope becomes too steep, they have to ask other drivers for help to get up.

But this way of working also involves great dangers. Traffic, steep inclines, speeding, and a lack of safety measures make every trip a high-risk activity.

Don Mauricio also tells us a very difficult part of his story: he has suffered three accidents, one of which was the most serious of his life, an accident in which he lost his life partner.

During our filming, we also witnessed another accident. While working with a machete, Don Mauricio injured one of his fingers. Fortunately, Marlon was able to help him treat the wound, but the moment highlights the dangers faced by those who do this work every day.

We will also hear a story that demonstrates that they face more than just physical dangers. On one occasion, after climbing the mountain and working hard to cut firewood, they returned to where they had left it and discovered that the wood was gone: someone had stolen it.

In this video, we'll discover the human side of the woodcutters: their stories, their struggles, their income, the risks of their trade, how they transport firewood, and the experiences that have shaped their lives.

A story of effort, work, and survival in the coffee-growing mountains of El Salvador.
