In El Salvador, there's a story etched in the nation's collective memory: the story of the Golden Bridge, an impressive feat of engineering spanning the Lempa River in the San Marcos Lempa region. For many years, it served as a vital link for communication and trade to eastern El Salvador.

In this video, we'll travel back in time to learn what happened to that imposing structure and how, in the early morning hours of Thursday, October 15, 1981, around 3:30 a.m., the old Golden Bridge was dynamited during the Salvadoran armed conflict.

But this story doesn't end with the bridge's destruction.

We'll explore how communication between both sides of the Lempa River was maintained using temporary bridges while a permanent solution was sought. We'll also visit the sites where remnants of the old structures can still be seen and learn about the history of the railway bridge that played a vital role as a transportation route during those years.

Furthermore, this tour will include the testimony of a former combatant who was involved with the insurgent movement during that era. He will share his experience and memories of the events surrounding the destruction of the Golden Bridge.
We will also learn how the San Marcos Lempa area was connected to transportation, trade, and communication between different regions of the country, and how the bridge's destruction affected access to the east.

Finally, we will explore the history of the current San Marcos Lempa Bridge, built as part of the reconstruction of this important transportation route. Technical sources indicate that the new structure was completed in May 2000, after its reconstruction began in the 1990s.

A story of engineering, war, trade, transportation, and historical memory that can still be seen in the structures that remain along the Lempa River.
