The M2 Browning has survived nearly a century of changing warfare while countless newer weapons have come and gone. Its extraordinary longevity is rooted in a combination of firepower, reliability, versatility, and a design that could be modernized without replacing its proven operating system.
Developed from John Browning’s heavy-machine-gun work after World War I, the .50-caliber M2 became one of the most recognizable weapons in U.S. military history. From World War II and Korea to Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, and modern service, the “Ma Deuce” has been mounted on vehicles, ships, aircraft, and ground tripods. Today’s M2A1 improves the classic design with features including a quick-change barrel and fixed headspace and timing while retaining the fundamental operating system.
In this firearms history documentary, we examine why the M2 endured, what made its design so adaptable, and why the U.S. military continues to rely on it generations after its introduction.
