Fall asleep tonight inside a great Gilded Age mansion on Fifth Avenue, in the last years of the 1890s, where one rich family lived a private life behind a grand front that almost no one was ever shown. It took 30 servants to keep the house so that a family of 5 could live in it. The children were raised at the very top of the house by nurses and a governess, and brought down to their own mother for a single appointed hour a day. A French chef earned $100 a month while a scullery girl earned $3 or $4, under the same roof, on the same night. And when the great front door finally closed on the last caller of the afternoon, the house stopped performing and became, for a few quiet hours, only a home.
