Fall asleep to the quiet history of a single Gilded Age mansion, told gently, one room at a time, across one whole turning year. In the 1890s, at the very top of New York society, a great house on Fifth Avenue stood shrouded under white dust sheets for most of the year, then packed itself up and traveled 200 miles to Newport for a summer by the sea. A single night's entertaining could cost more than $70,000, in years when the average American lived on about $400 a year. The French chef earned $100 a month; the Irish housemaid who rose before six to light every fire earned $18. And in the deep of the winter night, when the whole house was finally asleep, only two people were still awake in it.

In this video, we talk about a year inside a Gilded Age mansion, including the great house being woken and closed with its dust sheets, the calling cards and the Four Hundred, a daughter's debut at the season's grand ball, the ten-course dinner served in the Russian style, the move to a Newport "cottage" that was really a marble palace, the servants' floor behind the green baize door, Thanksgiving and Christmas by the fire, and the whole household, upstairs and down, going to bed one by one.
