Wait.. Did they name Monk Gyatso (from Avatar the last Airbender) after the Dalai Lama? Did not know that...

interesting that  you mention Pema as an Avatar referance but not the fact that both Tenzin and Gyatso are relevant caracthers as well beeing the name of the dalai lama

We're almost to 2 million... and I've got something special planned :)

I just realized the connection with a High School classmate, Jigme Norbu.(nephew of the Dalai Lama). Jigme was one of the nicest fellas. I was sad when I heard of his death. 💔  Thank you for the video!

I feel like this needs a CGPGrey companion video "How to become Dalai Lama" where he explains the procedure on how to "find" the new "incarnation" after the current one dies.

about tibetan's orthography: it's way, and i mean WAY more etymological than even english's, meaning that spellings reflect an extremely archaic pronunciation of the words. Spelling hasn't been updated in over a thousand years. A word which they spell roughly like "grags" is pronounced "tah"

Excellent job, Matt! Thank you! I did graduate work in Tibetan Buddhism, and I couldn't have asked for a better video on this topic. Very comprehensive (for 28 minutes) and accurate. Bravo!

Hi Matt Baker, I love all of your videos, especially the presidents. I have been I fan since 2019. And today is my birthday. I'm only 11 but still I love history.

I can't believe I never knew the Dalai Lama's name being a fan of Avatar the Last Airbender 😭

Yay!! I’ve always wanted you to do this one because it’s such a complicated topic. Thanks Matt, cant wait to watch!

Another religion family tree video this will be amazing

It was a wonderful video. The history is presented in a simple yet accurate order. I studied Tibetan history and Tibetan Buddhism in school. This video can be a wonderful resource for students for quick revision. Thank you @UsefulCharts.

A family tree of previous Dalai Lamas would be interesting.

Fascinating that his sister, Jetsun Pema, has the same name as the Queen of Bhutan.

There are in fact 5 major schools of Tibetan Buddhism, the fifth one being Jonang, but because of historical reasons current Tibetan government in Exile has been resisting recognizing Jonang as a 5th school thus making it eligible for financial support from Tibetan government. Jonang belongs to New translation branch. Jetsun Dampa in Mongolia is supposed to be rebirth of one major Jonang Hierarch - Taranatha Kunga Nyingpo. There are also several minor schools such as Chagzam, Bodong and Choyul.

Would you consider doing family tree charts on the Maori monarchs of New Zealand, and the monarchs of Tonga? It would be interesting to compare them to the video you did on the Hawaiian monarchs.

long time viewe. this was impressively well put together and presented top 3 for sure. i cannot wait until you do the Karmapas! many do not know all the historical intrigue and such and the Karmapas are quite a bunch too. 😆this was excellent. thanks. i will be sharing it for sure. ✌🏻🤙🏻

Thank you so much for making this video, as a Tibetan I feel really happy

Omg, I'm so excited for the updated timeline of european history chart!!!!
