I was stupid enough to buy a lot of expensive art supplies once. I find my problem isn't getting to use them, but to motivate myself to make art to begin with.

I totally agree about doing smaller art. Switching to smaller sizes is what got me to finally practice and finish pieces.

That is so my problem I was raised to keep it for good. I have had to donate so many things not ever worn because I saved them too long. I’m usually a very quiet watcher of videos here on YouTube, and I’ve been watching you for years and honestly — these art pieces you made in this video are literally my absolute FAVOURITES that you’ve ever made ❤ There’s something so whimsical, flowy and so eye-catching in such a dreamy way with these pieces and I love all of them, especially the first two!! The colours are amazing and I really think ink and coloured pencils work so well for you and your style 🥰

You’re absolutely right that sometimes a simple change makes all the difference and helps you actually use your art materials. I used to keep my pencils in those really pretty pencil cases with a slot for each pencil, and I arranged them by color families, from the lightest colors to the darkest ones, first the cool colors and then the warm ones, and they looked beautiful like that. But when it came time to actually use them, that’s where the problem was, because I had to take out the pencil case, open it, look for the colors I needed and, after using them, put them back in the correct place, and this interrupted my flow. So one day I simply got rid of the pencil cases, took the pencils and divided them by color families, tied them with rubber bands, put them in a nice bucket on my desk, and now I use them all the time because they’re just there, accessible 24/7.

67 year old Brit struggles to use fancy supplies, brought up to save stuff for best, dinner service, perfume, dress etc, and…art supplies. Also, is there anything that beats just looking at an unused set of beautiful crayons? Surprised and gratified to hear that someone who creates such beautiful pieces of art can also feel intimidated. Thank you for sharing. I’m going to break out my pristine 100% cotton sketchbook and my pristine set of handmade watercolours (I’m literally squirming at the thought of it)😂

One thing I've noticed about myself is I tend to be more precious about the supplies I bought as a set. So I purchased a couple of the luminance pencils, a couple neocolors, etc instead of the whole set, which I somehow feel an internal pressure to keep nice and not use.

... and so I grabbed my Faber-Castell pencils, took a sketchbook with a bad watercolor exercize on it and gave it a go. I can't tell the piece is significantly better now, but I had a really good and fun 25 minutes. Thanks!

Sometimes I save my exspensive stuff "for special things" but then something is dry because I've hung on to it for 5 years...this video definitely speaks to me

At this point I‘m mostly afraid of some of my products drying out or expiring. So I almost feel like smearing those paints and paintpens and alcohol markers all over some sketchbooks or canvases, just to feel like I‘ve used them, before they get unusable. 😅 I invested so much money into them and now I feel like I can‘t take my time to use them up.. because they‘ve been lying around for years already.🙈

Those pieces turned out SO GOOD. I don’t have Caran DAche but tried the technique with my cheapies and it works too. Now to use them up so I can buy the C-DAche! Hopefully comments on old videos bump them up again
