This is easily one of the best soundtracks for any movie EVER made... Not just the main theme... The whole soundtrack.

Interesting fact:- The actor Wes Studi, who played Magua and the actor Maurice Roeves, who played Colonel Munro, become very good friends during the making of this movie. They were in regular contact right up until the time Maurice died back in his native Scotland in 2020.

The finale of this movie is one of the greatest endings ever!!
Everything from the waterfall onwards is just pure cinema at it's best!!!

From Duncan's last words ("My compliments, Sir, now take her and get out!") to when Magua hits the rock is a masterclass in wordless movie storytelling.

Fact: actress Johdi May (Alice Munro) was only 16 during filming, and her mother was on set every day making sure Michael Mann kept his word that the relationship between Alice and Uncas (Eric Schweig) would remain far more implied than shown. However, in both the Huron village and upon the Promontory, you can see there is a braid on the right side of Alice's head, almost certainly put there by Uncas after he kept her from throwing herself into the waterfall. For many natives, a man placing a braid like that into a woman's hair was essentially an engagement of marriage.

I like that more Youtubers are finding this movie

This movie is based on a novel from the 1800s romanticizing historical events. I am privileged enough to own a first printing that was passed down from my Grandfather whose Great, great, great, Grandfather was a Revolutionary War Veteran in Capt. Wright's Westminster West Company of the Green Mountain Boys.

It pissed me off every time Oliver ran his mouth over the beautiful under the stars moment between Hawkeye and Cora.  😂

Colonial Times not Revolutionary Times. One of the reasons the American Revolution for Independence happened was due to this conflict: "The Seven Years War" or "The French and Indian War". England spent massive amounts of $$$ sending large numbers of troops to the Colonies to pursue this conflict,. Many of the taxes the Colonists bitterly resented were England's attempts to partially recoup the costs of this war.

Duncan's redemption is simply amazing

To this day - whenever we go anywhere and split up to meet later - I always say :  Stay alive, no matter what occurs - I will find you!

Sachem (the Huron chief) told Magua to take Monroes youngest daughter as his wife so that his heart may heal and Monroes seed doesnt die.

The French and Indian War was essentially the North American theater of the Seven Years’ War. It’s unofficially the first “world war” or global conflict for taking place in two hemispheres and involving multiple Native American nations and European countries and kingdoms fighting in Europe, North America, India, the Philippines, the Carribean, West Africa, and the North Atlantic and other seas and oceans.

The Last of the Mohicans was actually the 2nd novel in James Fenimore Cooper's 'Leatherstocking' series. The first tale is The Deerslayer, where we are introduced to Hawkeye (Nathaniel) and Chingachcook. The other three stories after Mohicans are - in order - The Pathfinder, The Pioneers, and The Prairie. The Canadian film The Pathfinder, a sort of quasi-sequel to this film was shot a few years later. It was a lower budget effort featuring Kevin Dillon as Nathaniel and Graham Greene as Chingachcook. It wasn't in the same league as Mohicans, but it's worth a watch.

"My Compliments, Sir"😢 Good character arc

The french general is Louis Joseph de Montcalm, who in 1759 famously fight and died in the battle of the Plains of Abraham against the Brits. He is an national hero of the Québécois. In this film he is portrayed by the late Patrice Chéreau, who was one of the most significant figures in French theater and cinema of his time. He was director and screenwriter of La reine Margot in 1994.

The French officer, who is reading the intercepted letter to General Webb, is Captain Bougainville. Later, he undertook his famous circumnavigation of the globe. The island of Bougainville is named after him.

This is a realistic movie about the cost of war. It is one of the most accurate historical films you will ever see. Although the dramatic title is untrue, the siege of Fort William Henry is correctly portrayed. The disparity in force is true, the issue with the militia is true, the captured letter from Webb to Munro is true, the French did use the letter to convince Munro to surrender, the surrender terms were generous and accurately portrayed, and the ambush massacre of the surrendered troops is true. The Fort William Henry massacre is one of the largest in American history, with 700 casualties, mostly killed. The personal drama, with Cora, Alice, Duncan, and Hawkeye and his father and brother, is invented.

I think you all missed the opening title card, which set the scene pretty well. Also, Oliver missed where the Sachem gave Alice to Magua to be his wife, to heal Magua’s heart.

The book this is based on is a famous historical novel, often regarded as the first important novel in American literature (1826). In my father’s day, c. 1940, it was required reading in most U.S. junior high schools. That had ended by the 1960s, but I read it on my own at age 11.

This is part of a 5 book series, The Deerslayer, Last of the Mohicans, The Pathfinder, The Pioneers, and The Prairie, collectively known as The Leatherstocking Tales.  I named those in chronological order, though they were not published in that order.
In literature, The Last of the Mohicans was the second to be published.  It differs from the film significantly in the character relationships.  In the book, Duncan is in love with Alice and Uncas is in love with Cora.  Cora was mulatto being the result of her father's  relationship while posted in the Caribbean.  In the film, you will hear her referred to as "the dark one" (from the book).
They are in New York, on the west bank of the Hudson.  Fort William Henry is a state park, now.

Duncan didn't do it for Hawkeye, he did it for Cora to be happy.  Duncan did actually love her.

"Promentory", the song playing as they're running and fighting up the mountain, evokes so much emotion. The musical score is such a presence in this great movie

Possibly the ultimate Daniel Day-Lewis movie is the Steven Spielberg-directed "Lincoln." It's stunning.
