Something is changing at farmers markets — and shoppers are starting to question whether everything being sold there is really as local, handmade, or unique as it appears.

Alongside legitimate farmers, bakers, artists, and small businesses, customers are calling attention to resellers offering mass-produced products, unusually expensive goods, and merchandise that appears to rely heavily on generic AI-generated artwork. That can make it harder for shoppers to tell the difference between something grown or handcrafted locally and something purchased elsewhere and simply resold at a markup.

In this video, we’re looking at the changes people are noticing at farmers markets, the reseller problem, why prices can get so high, and how AI-generated “slop” merchandise is adding an entirely new controversy to spaces traditionally associated with local makers.

Produce at the farmer's market is supposed to be cheaper than at the grocery stores because it doesn't have to be transported 100s or 1000s of miles. It's not. It's way more expensive. Also, it's a lot harder to find organic at the farmer's market. Speaking of my local market.

Yes, I'm an old man but when I grew up we were taught right from wrong, we had a moral compass, we said yes sir, yes ma'am, we worked mowing grass, bagging groceries for tips, washing cars, cutting hay etc.

This may be true at some farmers markets. However, the farmers markets that I vend, the county actually inspect the farms. No crafts, only produce & food sourced from local farmers.

Talk to the organizers. One of the advantages to local is the direct feedback loop. In my small town, the farmer's market is 100% legit even if a bit underwhelming. If an interloper was to come in with wholesale goods, they would get gossiped out to the town limits.

Made a comment about a month ago about liking Sourdough bread at my local FM but that it was more of a treat because I couldn't afford $11 a loaf on a regular basis. I was flooded with comments on how hard the bakers worked, how expensive ingredients are and how high the stall rental prices are at the FM. I wasn't disputing any of that, just saying I can't afford to get ALL my bread there.

Purchasing veggies at a grocery store and lying about it being fresh from your non existent farm and selling them at a farmer's market should be a FELONY.

When I was growing up in Florida the Strawberry Festival brought strawberries everywhere here. Every restaurant had a strawberry shortcake and/or strawberry milk shake special. Now there are no strawberry fields or strawberries for that matter in Florida left it seems.

5$ for 50lbs of apple was the price before Covid where I live. We would pick them ourself, fill a huge 50lbs bag for 5$. They were giving them away and it was straight from the tree, best apple I ever had. Now they sell 5lbs bags for 10$.

The average “farmer” at the Farmer’s Market is a reseller. Look closely at the melons and other fruits. Theyalready have stickers on them and its not from a local farm.
Our Farmers Market had a flea market on the other side. My mom once noticed that they had strawberries and other fruits in March and April. It was out of growing season for them in our area in Tennessee. They were buying these fruits from Florida and reselling. They still have pesticides and other chemicals on them as if you got them from the grocery store.
