$850k for the Oak Grove home for sale, per Zillow. It's been listed for 217 days, I'm sure they would entertain reasonable offers. 🙂

Perfect place for filming apocalypse movie

This town looks like someone's memory of a dream. And the memory is fading

For anyone curious as to why the population seemed to peak around 1980 in these towns and then cratered: "Louisiana's economy was extremely dependent on the petroleum industry, and when oil prices collapsed around 1985-86, it was devastating, especially for small towns in the southern and coastal parishes where oil field work was a primary employer. The population decline in 1990 census data is largely capturing the aftermath of that crash. Many of those jobs never came back, and people left to find work elsewhere."

That is such a shame. I am 70 yrs old and my grandmother lived in Bastrop until she died in 1982. I have such fond memories of spending my summers with her. Walking around downtown and shopping with her. We would get to go swimming with friends at the County Club. It was back when things were safe and simple. I treasure those memories.

This is so crazy...There are no people anywhere. Not all is abandoned, there are shops, cars, but not a single soul is walking

My grandfather lived in a house that never had a bathroom, they used an outhouse up until my grandmother died and he took sick and moved out. Granted this was in the early 70s, people teased him because he had the money, owning a fleet of boats, a farm, three rental houses and a tavern. The house was small but right on a river. They teased him saying he looked poor. He told them, people drive themselves sick to make money. Buy stupid overpriced cars, homes and cloths. Then they waste money renting or sometimes even buy a place just like this, to get away from it all. He told us, class is NOT really what degree of wealth you have, it's actually what degree of morals you hold. It's no shame in being poor or living poor. It's only a shame if the reasons behind it are self-inflicted. But a man's home is still his castle, so keep it painted, clean and care about it, it's part of you. Those words ring so loud today to me in many cases.

I live in Bastrop, and the entire town isn't like that. We have nice areas too. Would have been nice to show those parts of town, too.

Idk why but i feel like this place so beautiful for some reason

@1:30 I was born in Bastrop in 1991... we moved to California in 1993 where I was raised.. every time I travel back home and see the declining condition.. I thank GOD my mom left. It saddens me that 40% of the population live in poverty...AND THEY DON'T EVEN KNOW THEY'RE LIVING IN POVERTY!! smh

It's giving me The Walking Dead vibes 🥶🥶

Was born and raised in Bastrop. My Daddy worked at the papermill. I left there in 1969. My parents both passed away there and  were married 65 years.

I'm from Bastrop. Lived here for over 50 years. Are there some really bad houses and business that went out of  business? Yeah. But there is also some beautiful houses and businesses. When we lost the papermill Bastrop had already became a place with no good paying jobs. But just 30 miles away is Monroe and West Monroe. So people work there and live in Bastrop where property taxes is lower.

The most interesting thing is that the grass is mown almost everywhere.

It's truly sad to see an empty city and houses that were bought with hard work and effort and that were once full of life, laughter, first times, birthdays and Christmases... it always makes me think about how they were in their wonderful times

I love the fact that the houses are built so close to nature, with lots of trees and bushes right in their back gardens. Despite it being run down, I like it.

I deliver for Amazon in rural SW Louisiana and I drive through towns like this all the time. There's invariably a boarded up mill or factory in town that explains what probably happened. There are a lot of dying towns.

When a town loses the industry it relies on, that’s the time it’s critical to have smart town leadership that can attract a replacement industry.
It’s a shame to build up a community over decades then have citizens with no choice but to abandon it to survive.

Sadly, some of those homes that appear abandoned are inhabited.

half expecting a zombie to run out of one of those houses
