I slowly learned that I'm not a Dragon Age fan.  I'm a Origins fan

Youtube is polluted with low quality video essays and I just want to say how impressed I am with the first 10 minutes of the video. Actual commentary rather than filler recap of the plot.

Like if I’ll finish the series before Joseph Anderson finishes his Witcher Series.

Remember Ostagar 🫡

I still remember my first playthrough of Origins back in 2009 with immense fondness, I finished the game with a Dwarf noble and named the Mabari warhound Bhelen after my traitor brother. I loved the multiple origins and how you could see the fates of the origins you didn't choose while playing.

When I moved into my apartment I didn' thave internet for ages, so I just booted DA:O and played through it (for like, the 5th time) every evening after work. It was so good.

One does not simply skip Ostagar.

Finally a multi hour video about a video game where it's not just a guy describing his playthrough.

I think the dwarves had the best origins, the street rat origin was pretty good but the best one is the noble origin, cast into exile and then returns, helping his brother gain the throne and in exchange you get to be called a living paragon of the dwarves, your son because legitimate whitin the house of aeducan and your exile is revoked!  How badass is that?!

Entirely disagree on the Deep Roads segment, I think it's a very immersive and thematically connected part of the game, in a large part responsible for that extremely rare special 'internally consistent' feel that I think DAO has. Grey Wardens thematically represent self-sacrifice in a relentless struggle against insurmountable odds, and even moreso each Warden is eventually doomed to die fighting Darkspawn in these tunnels. The grueling experience of endless challenging combat through the Deep Roads allows the player to feel 'what it means to be a Grey Warden'.

I remember the thing I was most hyped for was the “grey” in the sales pitch. At that point, most games had you as a Boy Scout hero, or in more modern titles, you could play as outright evil. But none made you feel like just a person in the middle of a massive event, trying to survive or come out on top of the chaos.

Origins did that for me. I felt like I could shape the characters, story, and outcomes more than ever before.

I was still the “hero,” but how I played that role wasn’t about good or evil. It was about making choices that gave me the best chance of achieving my own goals.

2:20 Similar to Game of Thrones where we see Ned Stark, the most honorable man in the kingdom execute a man because those are the rules

Love the video!! Thank you ❤
My favorite Origin is the Dwarf Noble… the backstabbing done by your own brother who you can then make the arguably better king (the HARD choice)  is great.

They need to make a remaster or complete relaunch this, it would be GOTY today! Back in the day it was not release in a good time, today when games like baldurs gate 3 are finally awarded this would hit the same spot.
Best game I ever played, shame the sequels drifted away from this masterpiece. The banter between characters, the depth they had it felt like they were not just npc companions. The atmosphere, the deep combat and did I mention the atmosphere. Still remember the deep roads what a masterpiece that was, the Redcliffe where you defended the vilage, camping between locations oh I need to replay it again :)

Wow. New favorite channel, man. You're gonna keep blowing up if you keep delivering this level of quality, or even anything approaching it.

1:35:30 Imo, if we take this reading of Oghren as intentional, then the way the game treats him is actually kind of horrible.  I remember another Youtuber pointed out that every single unique gift for Oghren is some form of alcoholic beverage, and the game constantly plays his alcoholism for laughs in a way that, if your reading is correct, is genuinely mean-spirited.

And then there's the Awakening expansion, which wipes away any semblance of character development he had in the base game to slot him right back into the comic relief dwarf role.

That's why I think the Occam's Razor interpretation of Oghren is that he really was intended to just be comic relief, and that whoever wrote him didn't fully think through the implications.

Installing dao tonight. It a long overdue.

they used to have balls, they used to tell dark stories and allowed us to choose to add to that darkness or cast some light. The newer games just went down the shitter when it comes to writing, player agency and supporting characters. Origins truly was something else, a faithful remake would do it justice seeing as it's quite the old title by today's standard.

Bro DAO is still one of my all time favorites to this day. I would pay fists full of money for a good remake. Same combat and everything just polished up more, more animations and finishing moves, more spells and spell animations, nice modern graphics and more hand crafted locations. Inquisition did the locations right at least, imagine DAO with the same quality of map. And a re do of the mages tower of course. Would be amazing.

Fuck yeah - love me some origins
