in today's video, we watch the first half of an episode from a new podcast called "A Matter of Fat", hosted by women's health journalist Rose Stokes and obesity researcher Giles Yeo. we discuss and critique their ideas surrounding weight gain following a diet, why fad diets are not sustainable long-term, and the reasons (or in some cases, excuses) for why someone would remain overweight/obese after multiple attempts at weightloss.

Loved your video! First time listener today (while lifting).

I’m from the UK and had never heard of this podcast. Interestingly, when I was class 3 obese I think I had very similar thoughts to her. The sad thing is for most of these podcasts is it’s all about being the victim & trauma dumping instead of realising you actually have free will.

Took me a while to see my own delusions but so glad I did. 45kg down, running 25k a week, weightlifting, walking 12,000 steps a day, eating mostly whole foods and some soul foods. So proud of my composition and what I’ve achieved in around 1-2 years💪🏼💪🏼

Also I’m currently reading - Thursday Murder Club👌🏼❤

Last book I read was on the Brontë sisters and gives soooo much clarity and new understanding to their writing! I had finished Wuthering Heights for the first time and needed to know what the heck kind of person Emily Brontë was after finishing such a disaster novel 😆 (I loved it).

I don't recommend fasting to lose weight, especially anyone as addicted to food as these two. I like doing 1 day fasts with 0 calories on the day. But that isn't to lose weight, it's because I like how my body feels after it and I recommend people try a 1 day fast just to see how they feel. There is also research going on about 3 day fasts reducing cancer risks which I find very interesting. But the idea of using a fast as an excuse to binge and then restrict is insane to me.

I’m reading The Dorito Effect which is about the evolution and application of scientifically derived scents and tastes used in the food industry from whole foods to packaged food like items. Before this I read Salt, Sugar, Fat which is another expose on the ultra convince food industry and I also read Irreplaceable by Mary Roach

Gestational isn't associated to lifestyle at all, essentially. It's managed with it, but not caused by it. HOWEVER! having GD will increase likelihood of T2DM later in life.

Am I the only person who doesn't think an ultimatum for a healthy weight is a bad thing? Like it can certainly be done in an abusive way, but without any other information I don't see it as any different than saying you won't stay with someone if they keep smoking.

My hot take: obesity is a disease. It is not as easy as calories in and out alone. The WEIGHT part? 100%. Calories in and calories out. There are more elements than just the weight. The mental element is the hardest part about it. That's what makes it complicated......but it isn't a matter of your brain wanting you to be fat for survival. Tf? Lmao

Mr Yeo is technically correct. I think you are misinterpreting what he is saying. He is explaining physiology correctly. He's a Cambridge University Expert.
