Shouting "Iran Iran" after a win in front of a very patriotic American crowd, at a time of such heightened tension between the two countries is genuinely genius.
My grandparents were from Iran, im Iranian Assyrian and one day i was watching wrestling and the Iron Sheik was cussing in Farsi, my grandma was like Mikey...what are you watching with all those bad words. Im like its the Iron Sheik Nana and hes Persian, from then on the whole family watched and rooted for the Iron Sheik, to us he was a hero!! I didnt like Hogan, i loved the Sheiki baby!!
Imperial Iranian Solider, Bodyguard to the Shah, Olympic alternate, Flees Iran on pain of death, 2 x Asst Olympic Coach for the USA, AAU Greco-Roman wrestling champion and gold medalist. All BEFORE a 37 year professional career ! What a life The Iron Sheik lived !
It still blows my mind that Sheik was 81 years old when he passed away, it’s old by normal standards but by wrestlers it’s considered damn near immortal.
Rest in peace Sheik, not only do we know him as the crazy old man telling people to go F themselves and flipping them off but also an Iranian icon, legend and fantastic heel in the wrestling business. 🇮🇷🤼♂️🙏🕊
My girlfriend at the time bought me an Iron Shiek doll (about a foot tall) for Christmas in 1985 as he was my favorite heel, we have been married since 1986 and the doll still sits in the package on the shelf in my workshop to this day!
I'm not sure what I like more, the Camel Clutch itself, or the way he would shove his opponent into the mat when he broke the hold. Sheik was in a league of his own. An amazing athlete who will be sadly missed. May his memory be eternal.
