E-Ink Tablets Explained in 21 Minutes 59 Seconds

In this video I compare the Supernote Manta, reMarkable Paper Pure and Boox Go 10.3 Gen II through a different lens: not just specs, but the real problems people are trying to solve when they buy an e-ink tablet.

Paper chaos, digital fatigue, long-term knowledge capture, workflow integration, minimalist tech, creative freedom and productivity all come into it. The Supernote Manta is still the tablet to beat, but the reMarkable Paper Pure gets surprisingly close when judged by what most people actually want from an e-ink notebook.

Is the Boox Go 10.3 Gen II still the better value? Is the Paper Pure the better everyday notebook? And does the Manta still deserve its top spot?

Great video, as always!! Thank you. Back in 2021 I was in the search for my 1st e-ink and I had the eternal question, rM2 or A5x. Went with supernote. I enjoyed it. 2 months ago I decided was time for a change and went for the rM2. Absolutely love it. In the meantime I saw the paper pure come out and watch all your videos. Was a bit deflated I had just bought rM2 and the pure had just come out. Then I remembered I was still in the trial period so I have just returned rM2 and refund has been returned. Placed a new order for the rM pure. Waiting now!!! I hope I enjoy it at least as much as rM2. Will see. Your videos have been of great quality and great help. Big thank you.

Back in 2018 I got myself an Honor View10 and really liked the hardware. However, the software ultimately let me down and I returned it. This has also happened recently with my Boox Go 10.3 (Gen II). I'm hoping when my Manta arrives things look up. Thank you for your reviews, which have informed my purchases.

I want something that is dedicated to note taking, things I can use to jot down ideas, draw diagrams, doodle, and generally have a work flow that doesn't involve distractions. The added bonus of the ReMarkable is the texture of the device, I don't like writing on a conventional tablet. This will be perfect for keeping all my notes and ideas in one place.

I ordered the Manta a day before the RM Pure was released, I had some cold sweats when reading and seeing the first few reviews of it, including your own. Now I'm a few days in though, I'm really happy with the Manta, I've not had e-ink before but have used a Samsung tab for notes, I have colleagues with RM devices and after comparing, I still think I've made the right choice.

Thanks for the comparison, I'll be interested to hear how much you're drawn back to the Pure over the coming weeks and months

great video!
one of the questions that are rarely discussed is the usage of such devices for sensitive data, especially if you use it for work related data deadling with critical information or personal data. e.g. which ones do offer full hard drive encription, which ones offer the least friction when you cannot use the corresponding cloud services, etc.
Really keen on a ranking in this regard.

Thanks again for this incredible series on the pure! But I must say that this device, even with the price point and all the arguments mentioned can’t be at this position due to the remarkable platform itself and it’s constraints - indeed it’s improving but honestly we’re so far from something that would do anything else than paper for 400€ at this point distraction free would just be a piece of paper 😅 it’s barely better than Rm2 that was booted out of the top 10

No matter what else I try, I come back to Remarkable each time. They really nail the core writing experience without any other bells and whistles. I have a lot of complaints about their development priorities, hardware choices, design philosophy etc - but the core experience really is hard to beat IMO if all you want is a really good notepad.

I believe it's a great discussion of the 3 devices. Very good analysis and factors used. However, when you fit into the top 10, you noticeably run into a problem. All the Boox devices would be same in terms of experience except for color and size. you could argue that the Tab XC is almost a laptop or Ipad replacement. I believe you need multiple list based on bigger picture use cases. What is each user persona looking for?

Hi, kit I have Supernote Manta, Iflytek AI note 2 and the reMarkable paper pro all are fantastic but find myself being drawn each day back to the reMarkable paper pro just to get a fix of writing on it and using the colours to make my entries pop. I think the reMarkable paper pro is so supremely built and is a joy to use however the other two are excellent in their own ways obviously the Manta for the writing experience which I tend to use for long journals and the Iflytek to schedule all my dates and making my notes more concise with the AI feature. Thank you for your excellent input.

I have a remarkable 2, which I like better than the pro (I still like the feel of the pen/paper better than the plastic-on-plastic feel of the "move").

Aside from technical specs (Speed, Contrast, etc) are there any practical differences on what the software will do on the PURE vs. the old Remarkable 2.

I love my RM 2, Didn't love the pro, didn't love the move. Is there any reason to upgrade to the PURE?

Thank you for the review. At 4:22, can you tell us which is the EMR stylus with the ceramic and eraser button?

@jimbobelvis3295 3 months ago

I’ve had my manta for about a year now and it’s awesome it fulfills all my needs and they keep adding things I didn’t know I needed. That said, I really have a craving for the RMPP move. I am interested in a niche device to replace a pocket notebook, the nomad is tempting but the size is too similar to the manta.

@stefanotarlon5072 4 months ago

I’m testing Viwoods AI paper mini and it works well. My main problem is sync calendar with Apple ecosystem because I have all agenda in Apple calendar. Notes are synced well. Supernotes is Android based?

@deegola 4 months ago

So I work in construction and would like an e-ink tablet that would replace my usual legal pad and pen. I don’t need color, or a backlight, but it will be outdoors in the heat and dust and may get set on the ground a bit while I perform measurements. Any recommendations? Also, something manageable in size and definitely syncs with maybe my OneDrive. Thanks!

Well! You've just compounded my decision loop paralysis! Does my investment in the kindle eco system put the new kindle scribe above the utility and lower cost of the remarkable pure? I've done the pro's and cons list and am literally flip flopping. Dah!🙃 I'll sleep on it - again. Love your video's.

Currently have the boox 10.3 go gen 1 ,ordering the remarkable pure as i type this 😊,

I'm a bestselling author who writes under the name Randall Arthur. I always handwrite my initial chapters. I'll edit and re-edit those chapters by hand until I'm satisfied with my work. Then, and only then, will I type the chapters into my software program. Since 2020 I've used e-ink tablets on which to write. I started out with the reMarkable 2. I then shifted to the Kindle Scribe because of its front light and its e-book accessibility. Last year I shifted again, this time to the ViWoods Mini. This is my favorite so far. It contains all the features I prefer—the portability, the front light, the e-book accessibility, the writing feel, the AI feature for quick research, and the almost instant eraser function.
