Lake islands were long considered the periphery of the world during the early Piast period. However, research in recent decades shows something entirely different. It was here that strongholds were located, central locations like the famous Ostrów Lednicki, control points for exchange and communication, and most likely also spaces of symbolic and ritual significance. Islands were not an escape from power, but often its tools. Bartosz Tietz explains.

Dookoła mam pełno wczesnosredniowiecznych grodzisk słowiańskich, głównie typu Tornov Klenica. Zasadniczo większość jest na łąkach w pobliżu rzeki, ale biorąc pod uwagę dawne rozlewisko Obry kiedyś były one wyspami. Tak więc można przyjąć, że takie lokowanie siedzib przez Słowian nie było czymś nietypowym, a nawet poszukiwali miejsc wśród bagien, czy wysp na jeziorach.
Drugie ciekawe spostrzeżenie - wyspy jako odizolowane od zwykłego świata święte uroczyska do łączenia się z bogami według słowiańskiej osi świata znanej z posągu Światowida i motywu ozdobnego na pochwach noży, ostrogach z X-XI wieku.
Gniezno też się w to wpisuje - tam jest wzniesienie otoczone wodą jeziora Jelonek.
To wszystko kojarzy się z pradawnym mitem o stworzeniu świata przez Peruna z ziemi z dna oceanu dostarczonej przez Welesa. Powstała z tego wyspa, która zaczęła się szybko rozrastać.
