I was obsessed with Venture at the arcade and remember the very day mom got me the Colecovision port when I had no idea it was out. Still have and play it on my Phoenix CollectorVision.

Leaving the room doesn't reset the hallmonster (trademark) timer. Dying does.

The #1 reason to have a Colecovision is the ability to play these great Exidy/Universal games (Venture, Mouse Trap, Lady Bug, Pepper II, Mr. Do, etc.).  I hold out hope that maybe someday we will get ports of some of these games for modern consoles (the Evercade?).

It's amazing that in 1982, you could play this port at home, a bit easier than the arcade, which in my case is a good thing. Many thanks Jon !!

Every time you shoot a dead monster it resets the time it takes for it to disappear.

The "bonus winky" sound has been my email and text notifier for the past 15 years.

Owned this on my beloved colecovision and played it nonstop. It's wild because just last week i was showing my son this game on my gamestation go. What a classic!

I love this game, is one of my favorites in my Coleco Vision collection. I played this version first before playing it in the arcade. In the arcade version, you can fire your arrows, but they are useless, since the Hallmonsters are invulnerable. Also, the room expands and contracts as you enter and leave it respectively. You don't want to enter, a room then exit, then enter again, as that will shorten the length of time you can stay in the room before a Hallmonster will show up. Also, avoid shooting a dead monster, as that will "refresh" it, and will prolong the length of time it takes to vanish. In the arcade, you can actually see the monster decompose until it vanishes. I also love the sound the arcade game makes when your game is over; it is very mystical, and otherworldly, I can't describe it properly, it has to be heard firsthand.

Loved this game on ColecoVision. It preserved the arcade experience very well but didn’t require the constant quarters to get better.

Played this game alot on my older brothers Colecovision in '82.  Hall monsters used to scare the crap out of me.  😂

There's another little Easter Egg on level 3 - You mentioned that the Key Room was shaped like a key, but the Genie room is shaped like the lamp treasure (from the outside and when you get inside it even has the hole in the handle) and the Cyclops room is shaped like the Cyclops head from the outside and inside it even has the center eye.  Fun stuff that I noticed as a kid.  I love this game.  I have gotten all of the treasures on the treasure room page.  After you collect all of those... it just starts all over again.

Back in late 1982 or early 1983 I will still rocking my Atari 2600 but a local store allowed you to rent video games machines and cartridges per week.  While I eventually owned a Colecovision of my own by 1984, I rented the console and this cartridge for a week.  Having only played the 2600 port of this game, it was a momentous sea change in gaming for me.  I don't think you mentioned this in your playthrough but the corpses of the monsters will live longer if you shoot them repeatedly.  That's a downside of the auto-fire since you need to grab the treasure and clear out of the room before the Hallmonster comes looking for you.

I only ever played it on the Atari 2600, but back then it was one of those "stressful" games because you not only had to grab the treasure, but get in and out within a certain amount of time. When the Hallmonster(TM) showed up, it made this upsetting sound on the Atari that just kind of made you scared of it. It comes out of nowhere and there's nothing you can do to stop it, so all you can do is run. Fun game though. Definitely played it a lot.

I'm really enjoying your ColecoVision reviews, Jon!
This was the first cartridge that my brother and I purchased for our ColecoVision back in Feb '83.
Still have the original receipt (paid $24.97) from McDade & Co in Westmont, IL. Great times!

For 1982 the music in this game was revolutionary for home console.

I can't help but to think of Ace Ventura finding Captain Winky while watching Winky in Venture. Ventur(a) Ventur(e).

Those hall monsters terrified me as a kid playing this!

I loved this game.  I like the snake room music the best.  The hall monster sound of him coming in the room used to scare the crap out of me!

Venture was my favorite ColecoVision game growing up. Over 20 years ago, I actually attempted a 3D remake of it for a Retro Remakes Competition using Dark Basic. My whole world shifted when my daughter arrived right around that time.  She just graduated from college and I was recently let go as part of a restructuring, so I have some unexpected free time right now.  Planning to revisit a new Venture remake using Godot.

Probably my favorite game on CV. Fond memories as a kid when this came out. Played it non stop for hours alone and with friends and family. I remember my grandfather telling my mom to “hurry up or you’ll get that green stuff chasing you!”

Also, when you lead a room and come back in, you lower the countdown timer for when “green stuff” shows up.

And, if you keep firing into dead monsters, you reset their countdown timer to disappear. In other words, they will remain until you stop firing into them.

Great stuff Jon! I’m about to go hook up my CV and play Venture.
