On the first of September, one face appears on millions of phones in the Philippines, and it means only one thing: Christmas has started. Four months of it, the longest Christmas on Earth.

In this Living Latitudes documentary we follow the season from the ber months to the Feast of the Three Kings: Jose Mari Chan and the songs that never leave, the parol star lantern and the twenty-foot giant lanterns of San Fernando, Pampanga, played by hand on steel rotors; party season and the 13th-month pay; carolers with bottle-cap tambourines and the godparent hiding with the lights off; nine dawn masses of Simbang Gabi with bibingka and puto bumbong; La Loma lechon on Christmas Eve and the Noche Buena table; the two million Filipinos working abroad, from London to the cardboard Sundays of Hong Kong, and the balikbayan box that smells like "amoy States"; Baguio's cold Christmas, the belens of Tarlac and the Panunuluyan; Simbang Gabi in Dubai and at St. Peter's; Manila's lights, beach Christmases, the Christmas after Typhoon Haiyan in Tacloban, NAIA's busiest December ever, the exodus to the provinces, and a New Year's Eve that sounds like a siege.

This one is for everyone flying home this December, and for everyone who can't make the flight this year. Maligayang Pasko.
