How SH2 builds off of SH1 and twists the player's expectations is definitely a video I want to see made/hear you ramble.

A lot of great points, especially "shortcomings because your medium is an unsolved problem versus shortcomings because of being limited by current expectations"

What I got from this video is that I should buy the rights to Koudelka and turn it into a modern over the shoulder third person shooter.

Something about the Maria garden scene that I will credit the game with because I haven't seen anyone else actually mention this yet - she tells the story wrong. In her version the man on the lake is lost in a storm, but in the actual version he is tricked by a false light. It's not like, super amazing, but it's cute and was flew under a lot of folks' radars so y'know, good on ya, bloober. You did the thing!

Funnily enough I feel like the tone of the fandom shifted wildly some time of the announcement in which people were tired of any criticism/negative feedback and shunned it. I would hear things like "No one hates Silent Hill like Silent Hill fans" and it became a thing that you hated SH or didn't want it to succeed if you criticized this remake. And there definitely were bad faith critics that were criticizing it for stupid reasons. But sadly I think this video confirmed why I was worried about it in the first place. It looks nice and there are things done well but it feels generic in the sort of Modern Remake way. Anyway, great video and criticism!!

It's a real shame that they couldn't say, reveal some more canon of the original Silent Hill 2 charecters backstorys in those additional cut scenes & dialogue, if there were anything left unrevealed, that is. Feels like it'd be the ideal opportunity to do so. (and if not, perhaps they should of cottoned on to the fact that they were indeed making different charecters based on the originals, and written in more lore that fits their version of Silent Hill to give the game more of value to actually say...)

The remake also makes me think of something that NitroRad said in a video he did about SH series in general, which is that the fixed & dutch camera placement style really did something to help communicate the emotions of the scene that the characters are in - sometimes it's great for gameplay by hiding the hazards around you but in many other cases, it's more useful for framing how characters fit into that scene and the mood the game is trying to portray in that moment. That's lost when you've got a camera bolted to the back of your protagonist.

I couldn't put my finger on how the melee bothered me in the remake, but you nailed it, it's the magnetic attacks and not being able to move out of the way without jamming the dedicated dodge button. That and the camera angle kinda blocks my view sometimes. Oh and you told me the criteria for the remake endings in your stream like a week ago and I think I'm on track now to get In Water so thanks and congrats on the new channel.

You didn't asked, but if somebody wondering. Memory leak is the situation, when programm put's some data into memory to do some work, but doesn't remove it from memory properly when done with it, and all that pile of unused data growing and growing.

You compared the melee to TLoU and GoW (which are probably the most popular way to refer to that style), but for me that's the Batman Arkham Asylum thing. There it really fit the style of gameplay they were going for and helped the player handle 6+ enemies at a time without getting disoriented or overwhelmed by spacing issues. When applied to TLoU, it buffed out the rough edges of gameplay because "player miss less equals feel more good" at the expense of the story+gameplay package. Which is what happened here too. AAA could learn a thing or two from player-hostile mechanics

My main takeaway from this is that now I want a version of The Last Of Us but with Press Turns in it. I want Joel to hit a clicker's weakness, thereby taking up only half of a turn for the next party member.

This is the perfect essay on the current remake climate.

And I would love to see that video about SH2 subverting SH1's expectations!

Excited to hear your thoughts about the remake and for your second channel!

When it comes to remakes that change drastically from the original like RE series, I don’t mind it but only if in the process the company doesn’t completely erase the original version to be played somehow. As a latecomer to the series, I absolutely want both experiences. (I’m happy that the OG RE1 - 3 is at least available on GOG)

I also unironically enjoy tank controls every now and then too. Methodically backing up to gauge space between enemies and attack has a unique tenseness to the combat I enjoy.

This is something I think about a lot, especially when it comes to things like the modern generic-ifying of games
It feels a lot harder to find games in specific formats and it's something I never really consciously noticed until the Sh2 remake, but I have been critical of specific series doing this, Monster Hunter in specific I feel falls into the kinda "Faster equals better" lane of design when the older games didn't really care about twitch speed or reflexes and instead more about planning and prediction
SH2 is similar and it's why I actually really enjoy the gameplay of the older SH games, albiet more casually. The planning of each fight before you take it, considering the resources you have and how many you'll spend, if you cross this area of the map enough to justify spending it. A lot of AAA games feel like they consider games and gameplay styles that make you consider elements of these outdated, and focus on more smooth, reaction oriented games that kinda make it easy to thoughtlessly consume them. They're pushed into a template of what's popular instead of something more unique, and the trend towards remakes kinda leads to these styles of game being lost to time.

People were pissed about RE3R because it had cut out a large chunk of the game content, not inherently because it wash short. Where as SH2R has the opposite effect, padding for more time. Honestly if each section of the remake was 20% shorter it would have made a huge difference. Padding out the game with story is a non issue in the SH2r even if there was no real reason to do it other than interaction sake. Where as grabbing the 6th  key in the sequence of unlocking a plethora of doors to complete puzzles IS hurting the overall gameplay.
But i did enjoy your review punchy! Cheers!

7:35  I don't think it's because of the graphics. I mean, yeah it is. But it's also because of the poor optimization. If you don't know,  there are lots of large parts of the map that are rendered in high quality that you would not be even able to see because of the fog. And the funny thing is that the fog in silent hill 1 was used to improve performance. And that would be a good way to save resources in the remake, but it doesn't do that. It loads everything in even if you can't see it.

Been looking forward to Unscripted Yap !

Best video I've seen so far on Silent Hill 2 remake. You're a real one.

Hey I really enjoyed your vid, I wholeheartedly agree that SH2R is a very different game to the original, and despite mostly enjoying my time with it, it didn’t resonate with me as much as the og did. There’s a certain eerieness to the whole saga that’s truly unique and hard to replicate, and probably because of the unnecessary additions and third person perspective the remake didn’t live up to it for me.

Anyway, hoping to see another vid of yours in the future, best regards.

Since you asked I will say I do enjoy this style of content from you.

I can't give a succinct break down on the video like it did on the video game, but suffice to say it left a positive impression over all, and that ending honestly felt powerful.

I'm looking forward to whatever rambles you have in store

I feel they could at least have kept a variation of the abstract daddy enemy in the hotel; his presence to me feels like a way to signify James' guilt as both he and Angela's father did something horrible by holding down someone they're supposed to care for on a bed. Kinda lessens the impact of the In Water ending IMO
