A little feedback. A few years ago, during a leisure trip to Northeast Asia, I treated myself to a glass pen made according to traditional methods by a local craftsman for thirty-four thousand yen (or about €195 or US 230). With this writing instrument, I was able to cover about half of an A4 sheet with a single dip, and it was very smooth and consistent. A delight! Alas, the expression "fragile as glass" did not come out of a clown's hat, and what was bound to happen, happened. A split second of inattention was all it took and the tip of the beautiful tool was broken.
Subsequently, for a little more than half the price, I acquired another quality glass pen from the island of Murano, with, in the end, the same result: broken tip.
From then on, I fell back on the option of "Made in China" glass pens (€10) and believe me or not, but these inexpensive pens have nothing to be ashamed of, they do the job.
For my writing tests (inking), I also occasionally use a qalam. It is a reed (sometimes bamboo) cut and dried, used for millennia, particularly in the Middle East for calligraphy. Prefer those coming from Syria.

In the end, what matters is the pleasure we get from writing, not the price we pay.

I think I like the diy Speedball/Jowo frankinpen as it has a much more unique style of line quality. With the Kakimori style nibs, I start by swatching to use the majority of the ink then use the rest to write the ink descriptions with. Great review!

La penna automatica ci creda o no io usavo quella che veniva nella custodia del compasso per fare le mie pagine di ink Swatch, sia le macchie di inchiostro che la scrittura del nome dell' inchiostro! Bei tempi!

I do like a glass pen , the nib on my Hongdian glass pen broke , just the tip, they are very fragile. Thanks for showing us all the different dip pens. Regards from across the pond.

Hi Vincenzo!  This video was quite interesting!  Give me an idea of what some of the other type of dip pens are like.  I too, really like the Hocoro with feed piece!  All I need is one of those folded brass nibs and I can have the same setup you use!

For me, the super low cost and simplicity of it makes it number 1.
I also didn’t use both top and bottom reservoirs as they held way too much ink. I only used the top one and haven’t had anything pop off at all.

I like my Hocoro with the feed.  There is another review out there where someone wrote more than 1 page w/o dipping.

I have an IdeaPlus and it wont write. I suspect a QC problem and the grooves just aren't delivering the ink.

An interesting take on dip pens Vincenzo.  The Drillog - I started with one with the 0.8 mm tip, and later added the one with a 0.5 mm tip.  They only have the conical shape to feed ink to the tip that is above the cone so they can't write thicker lines.  The line it writes is self explanatory by the tip size.  I think there are 4 additional options that you didn't include or may not be aware of.  Two of them are from Tom's Studio, and they are the One-Dip-Wonder & the One-Dip-Nib.  The wonder is essentially a small spring and tiny magnet used to hold it to the underside of a dip nib.  The other one is basically looks like a ruling pen but more solid, and has a hollow in the middle where you put the fiber reservoir into the middle.  A third option would be the Sailor Hocoro Brush pen tip (I have one on it's way).  The fourth I call my DIY Serendipity pen.  I used a dip pen holder, removed the ferule and replaced it with an Ebonite feed & a regular nib.  The size is near perfect to use a #6 size nib in it with Ebonite feeds obtained from Fountain Pen Revolution.  As with anything, there are advantages & disadvantages.  The wonder can be displaced easily, but it does hold quite a bit of ink like the clip on reservoir.  The One-Dip-Nib can be difficult to get used to, but also holds a good amount of ink & you get the line width variation.  The Hocoro Brush, I think, will just be like any other brush pen - specific uses and not for general writing, but more for artists & Asian Calligraphy.  Lastly, the DIY Serendipity is easy enough to make from available parts, you can use any size #6 nib in any point size, holds a decent amount of ink, and has consistent ink flow.  I've made several, some with Chinese nibs/plastic feeds, and the best 2 were made with US purchased nibs & Ebonite feeds.  One caveat with the Ebonite feeds - you might have to sand it down to reduce the diameter if the holder opening is too tight for it to fit firmly.

Vince, kakimori just came out with their nib in copper and you must get it! It is smooth and consistent. I have the kakimori in steel, brass, and now copper…and I think the copper is the best by far. The steel is too sharp and cuts the page, the brass is too inconsistent, and the copper is the best of all worlds!

Great vid! Did I miss the part when you talked about the Toronto Pen Company brass folded pens that you use to swatch? You mentioned you would discuss but I don’t think you did?

I've been using a twsbi VAC700R as my daily driver for the past 5+ years but I want to transition to dip pens for most desk work.

Two questions, (1) what ink wells or features do you look for in an everyday use well to dip your pens. (2) nib type. I know this is users preference but does dip pens fundamentally need a different nib that cartridge based fountain pens?

I have never quite understood the whole swatching  idea. I orefer writing the name of the ink with the pen I am using.

Interesting in this one. My history with dip pens has been very mixed. Some nibs the ink seems to barely be there and runs out after two words. By the way can you post a link to the chinese kakimori ideaplus pen? It looked good.
