Wait your telling me my buddies don’t need $70,000 diesels to pull their side by sides?!

When I was a mechanic I used to hate on the 8.1. The universe decided I needed a lesson so years later as an electrician on a job site I got offered a companies old 8.1 regular cab 4x4 for $500. She's rusty as hell, but with 72k miles, it was a brainer. I went through the same stuff as you, cleaned up grounds, tuned it up, and Yeah, it's no turbo diesel, but it felt strong. It's first test was helping a buddy pick up a 65 cadillac coupe deville. It towed the 25ft enclosed trailer through the wisconsin hills effortlessly, pulled that trailer into the farm field where the cadillac sat, we loaded the caddy up, and now we got some real weight to see what she's made of. I was cruising 75mph no problem, no downshifting, no drama, just gas torque. Weird thing is, it gets about 10 mpg driving around empty, and got 10 mpg with the empty trailer, and got 10 mpg with the caddy, it just always sucks gas, but doesn't care what you have behind it. I've now fallen a bit in love with the 8.1, and am now building a 6 speed allison, crew cab, 4x4, dually 3500 that will also get a borg warner s475 mounted in a tool box I'm the bed. The 8.1s biggest downfall is lack of aftermarket support and the intake is wimpy, the heads have little baby ports, throttle body is the same size as a 4.8 ls, the poor thing can't catch its breath through those restrictions. Well borg warner can help with that, 15 psi ought to be enough to wake her right up, and maybe make some turbo diesel levels of torque, and certainly more than turbo diesel horsepower.

love that this is not the "average" Tom's refurb build. Been here since 13k subs and I can honestly say that the content has kept the same great spirit that drew a lot of us in the beginning.  I think a lot of us would love to see you take on a more modern muscle project. Would love to see you going at a Chevy SS or a C5 or C6.

Tom hear me out. Do some mods to the intake and heads so she can breathe better. Im almost possitive without too much money you could get a lot power and torque out if that engine since they are very restricted.

Tom, I'm all for loud exhausts, but this is a tow rig. You want it to be smooth and quiet because you'll be driving hundreds of miles in it. You also want a decent sound system in it, to listen to.... things.

23:50, To make it more dummy proof, put the female on the truck positive and the male on the truck negative and the opposite on the headlight. Then when you unplug the headlight you don’t need to know which is positive or negative.
