During the 17th and 18th centuries, European still life paintings were always metaphors for life and death. Pomegranates, apples and pears were representative of fecundity, bruised or aging leaves or fruit were about the fleeting nature of life etc. So, this artist is continuing her meditations on these themes. And doing it beautifully.

For me childhood was the present psychological and physical destruction of ongoing war, for you a profound encounter with the aftermath of its worst. For both that proved a deeply disturbing creative issue within our very different cultural traditions. The way you presented yourself and your painting here seems exemplary. The arrival of your child gives it timescale. Wishing you joy in both.
