Hild has been declared an outlaw for her husband's death. The man who pays the price on her head rides at the front of the hunters who chase her across the frozen river.
She runs to the one place none of them will follow: her own farm on the high fell. Everyone in the valley knows the rule. Nobody stays up there past dark.
Her husband Arnor lies under a cairn of stones above the farm. But the roof ridge of the house has caved in, as if something very heavy sat on it. The byre walls carry claw marks as wide as a door. And when the last light leaves the fell, a bell rings inside the cairn.
The hunters camp below the boundary stones and wait out the three nights of Yule. They say she killed him. She says the man leading them put Arnor under those stones. Nobody listens to an outlaw.
In the old North they had a word for the dead who will not stay under their stones: draugr.
Something sits on her roof now. It will not touch her. It will not let anyone else near her. And it has never crossed the stones.
