In 1921, five people were left on Wrangel Island, a frozen island in the Arctic Ocean. Two years later, only one walked away alive: Ada Blackjack, a young Iñupiat woman with no survival training.

This is her true survival story.

Ada joined the expedition as a seamstress, hoping to earn enough money to care for her sick son. But when the relief ship failed to arrive, the island became a nightmare of hunger, scurvy and isolation. Three men walked out across the sea ice toward Siberia and were never seen again. The fourth died in his tent. Ada was left completely alone with only her cat, Vic, surrounded by polar bears and endless ice.

She taught herself to hunt, trap foxes and shoot seals. She built a lookout tower to watch for polar bears. And she survived until a ship finally appeared through the fog.
