Kings and Generals' historical animated documentary series on the history of Rome continues with the new series on the reign of Augustus and his successors, in a series we call the Julio-Claudian dynasty. Previously, we have covered Caesar's campaign in Gaul (Caesar in Gaul - Roman History DOCUMENTARY), campaign against Pompey (Caesar against Pompey - Great Roman Civil ...) and how he won the Civil War (How Caesar Won the Great Roman Civil War -...), as well as the civil wars that brought Octavian - Augustus to power (Rise of Augustus - Post Caesar Rome). While the next episode will cover the battles of Augustus and his generals in Spain, Gaul, Illyria, Thrace, Arabia, Yemen and Africa (Augustus Fights in Spain, Thrace, Yemen, A...), and the third episode will cover Drusus and his early conquests in Germania, which formed Rome's Germanic frontier (How Drusus Formed Rome's Germanic Frontier...). Afterwards , Augustus navigates grief, succession, and frontier crises from Germania to Armenia to Judea, as Tiberius and his heirs shape Rome’s future (Final Years of Augustus: Betrayals, Revolt...), and then the Great Illyrian Revolt - the Bellum Batonianum (Great Illyrian Revolt - Roman Empire of Au...), followed by the battle of Teutoburg as we discuss who Varus was. (Why and How the Battle of Teutoburg Happen...). Afterwards, power struggles, betrayals, and mutinies mark Rome’s turbulent transition from Augustus to Tiberius.

All of Agrippa's sons died very young, and while none of them could hope to live up to their father's legacy, it is sad that such a great man's lineage would be cut so short.

Augustus's last days...sad but fascinating. Too bad Germanicus could not succeed Tiberius.

12:57 The eclipse mentioned here was a total lunar eclipse that would have been witnessed by the Pannonian legions in the pre-dawn sky of September 27, 14 AD (a little more than five weeks after Augustus' death). The early part of the eclipse would have been easily visible, with the moon acquiring its typical blood-red hue. However, as the dawn sky brightened, the totally eclipsed moon would have been rendered completely invisible, which might have been a particularly foreboding spectacle to the superstitious legionaries.

To be honest, I find it questionable that most roman emperors like Caligula, Nero and Commodus are actually crazed idiots, since most of what we know about them comes from historians whose literal purpose of writing about them is to make them look as evil as possible

I need HBO to produce another Rome show NOW!! Personally an anthology series were each season portrays different significant eras of Roman Rule would be preferred 😂 12 episodes each as well none of this 8 BS…

Hey just an FYI, I love this channel, and I need to preface this with I get it on the members only content, and I don't care that there is stuff behind a paywall that I don't get to access. Totally cool, and if this is working out for you overall, that's fantastic.... However I want to let you know a user experience in case it makes a difference to you or would be of help, of course if it's not promptly ignore me;

I have not been recommended a video from this channel since you started doing the members-only videos en masse. The only reason I ended up here today was because of the Wizards and Warriors channel, I assume it's related to this one because of the similarities, but I am not sure at all. Anyways, that's really all I had for you. I'll definitely make sure to check now that I realized it was happening, but yeah you disappeared from my recommendations entirely.

Again, I only care to say anything in case it's impacting the channel or you or whatever. If this works for you, that's great. Love the channel(s?), keep up the fantastic work.

As always Kings and Generals made my evening 10x better

Interesting.

Someone as competent and well prepared had a rough time with the succession. No wonder a change of administration was generally tough on the empire -- and why periods of frequent changes at the top were pretty much always awful.

Augustus lost because September has come.

I adore the really blunt title describing the whole mess, like a shrug towards it:
"Now what?"

The episode two of the The Caesars ( 1968 tv series) covered the mutiny of the legions and Tiberius' "reluctant" attitude to lead the empire

@greenglassman 11 months ago

Augustus' health FINALLY start to decline.. dude 😂😂😂

@Lucasp110 9 months ago

2:42 small correction, Agrippa postumus was Agrippa's son, and Augustus' maternal grandson

Hmm I didnt realize the transition from "Functional Roman Empire" to the "Coming Apart at the Seams Roman Empire" was so quick.

I guess it makes sense though. Caesar started conquering Gaul in 58 BCE and the Empire was basically at war that entire time all the way until the death of Antony and Octavian was only really able to hold it together due to basically being the direct heir of Caesar.

Turns out when you make the army the primary power broker in your state by being at war for decades, your army is going to be demanding a lot of concessions.
