近江商人、特に八幡商人は大店展開をして京都・大坂はおろか江戸時代後期の江戸日本橋に数多くの店舗を構えました。古く安土桃山時代には日本のみならず東南アジアまで進出しましたが鎖国となって日本へ戻れなくなった西川太郎右衛門の絵馬が日牟禮八幡宮に飾られています。また日本各地を行商し、江戸末期には北海道の海産物を発掘して木綿の肥料となるニシンで財をなしました。現在、おせち料理の具材となっている数の子やニシンの昆布巻き、田作り、ブリの照焼などは近江商人の料理が元となっています。
近江商人には現在の伊藤忠、丸紅、双日、ふとんの西川、高島屋、西武、ニッセイなど錚々たる会社が軒を連ね、またトヨタや三井などの源流でもあります。
