Rust isn't covered up: it's transformed. With a small bag of tannic acid, which costs about $3, dissolved in water, you transform orange rust into a hard, inert, black layer that seals the metal and stops it from rusting forever. It's the same chemistry used to write manuscripts that remain legible after 1,000 years, and the same chemistry blacksmiths used to protect iron. No endless sanding, no paint that blisters after six months: you use the rust itself as a shield.

🔧 THE PROPORTIONS OF TANNIC ACID (what I promised in the video):
• Light rust / shed tools: 1 tablespoon (~10 g) of tannic acid powder per 1 liter of warm water.

• Gate or fence exposed to the elements (medium rust): 2 tablespoons (~20 g) per 1 liter.

• Chassis or sheet metal with heavy rust: ~30 g per liter, and apply two coats (one, let it react, and the second the next day).

STEP BY STEP:
1) Degrease the metal well (detergent or alcohol). Without this, the tannic acid won't come into contact with the rust and WON'T react: this is mistake number one.

2) Use a wire brush to remove only the loose, flaking rust (leave the firmly attached rust: that's what will be converted).

3) Dissolve the powdered tannic acid in warm water until it has the consistency of strong tea.

4) Brush the gate with the solution, or dip small tools into a bucket. The orange will turn black: this is the reaction taking place.

5) Let it cure for 24 hours without touching or washing it.

6) If the iron will be exposed to the elements, apply a coat of paint or oil on top. Now, on a stable black base, the paint will last for years.

⚠️ What it DOESN'T do (so you won't be disappointed): it doesn't fill the holes that the rust has already eaten away; it's for iron and steel, not for aluminum or stainless steel; wear gloves and don't inhale the powder.

If this was helpful, leave a comment telling us what you'll salvage from the rust, and subscribe: in the next video, I'll show you the $2 liquid that seals any cement crack permanently.
