As an ex eventer I have spent hours standing with my horses over the years getting shoes put on/changed and never watched a shoe be made. What a piece of art! Thank you for your gift. Your profession protected my horses feet and allowed us to compete safely for years. I hope this horse recovers.
I agree: one tends to take more pride in a handmade product, rather than something pre-built! Plus, in this day and age, having more skills takes you farther.
That was the most amazing piece of craftsmanship I've ever witnessed. What a Masterpiece! I've watched so many different videos of ppl shoeing horses, but this just made me truly appreciate the quality of someone who knows exactly what they are doing. My grandfather was a blacksmith but he died when I was only 7 and I only got to witness his work first hand once. So appreciate all the care these ppl take in doing their trade. Kudos to all of you!!
Watching this, you can see why, historically, smiths were revered as magicians. The shoe itself is a work of art and the process of making it is mesmerising. I really am in awe of the knowledge and skills of the farrier. I know next to nothing about horses . . . but I'm learning fast! Incredible work.
I am absolutely blown away by the forging of your custom shoes. I've seen you do it a number of times and still come away astounded by your skills in that department.
Make sure you watch the whole video. A lot of your questions are answered throughout the video. Pretty ironic that we made a heart bar on Valentine’s Day! Enjoy the video!
I keep coming back to this channel because of the artistry and the care that goes into each shoe. It's all about making sure the horse will improve and get the support they need.
One my other favorite farrier channels talked about why he hand makes shoes a lot, too. He said that it gives him the ability to support the horses in ways that premade shoes sometimes can’t. He also said that he prefers to stock the unmolded bars rather than lug around all of the specialty premade shoes in any size that he might need. That made a lot of sense to me and I think it’s great that you encourage your students to learn it, even if they choose mostly premade shoes in their careers.
I don't think most people have a clue how much skill and craftsmanship is needed to make specialized horseshoes from scratch. Add in the fact that the draft horse, who was easily over 1000 pounds, was constantly pulling his hoof away- mad respect.
Even though this horse has not been kindly treated as his feet degraded to this state, he is amazingly patient with the trimming and shoeing process. I hope his life is much better going forward. Such skill — seeing the “before” it is hard to imagine getting to the “after.”
The workmanship of the farriers is fantastic. But also, what impresses me is the patience of the horses whilst the work is taking place on their hoof. Well done to both. x
