The best thing about shopping at Costco is having to pay to get in, i.e. the membership. Because everyone else has to pay to get in also. Which practically eliminates the "undesirable" people -- shoplifters, etc -- hanging around the store. This creates a much more pleasant environment than a typical store that is open to the public. Costco shoppers know they have a good thing going.

The huge malls are gone now, and Costco has smartly filled the void. It is a destination to go to, and the crowds fill the stores up.

Today—September 14, 2026—Costco gas was $4.00/gal. The area’s average is $4.20/gal. Our household burns through 30 gallons a week, and we get 5% cashback on top of that. Costco is absolutely winning, but I’m absolutely not losing. Not everyone is a mindless lemming. Not everyone is an impulsive shopper. Not everyone is inept with their money.

When I had a large family, and 3 Costco warehouses within 10 miles and 2 of them on my way to/from work, I had a membership. If I wanted to travel a bit further afield I had another 6 warehouses within 20 miles. At that time I got the premium membership (I think it was called executive), because I always exceeded the minimum for getting my fee back with rebates and even made some money on the fee some years.

Now with everyone moved away, and I am living over 85 miles from the nearest Costco, it is not worth it for me.

How much shop - lifting does Costco have. Its likely much less than other stores due to the identity membership system. Thats got to be a substantial saving in their vast amount of stores.

I got a 1 year membership in the UK and it was the worst membership I had ever gotten. The prices were more expensive than at the supermarket and nothing looked appealing. Only visited 4 times and each time only spent £10 each time.

Costco is awesome if you use it right!  After the first trip I really had it down because I ended up with allot of bulk items that were impulse buys.  The pantry was like a warehouse for a while.  After that a I stuck to my the list more.   Well now the kids are grown so we shop at the local supermarket.  Just less of a journey to find parking.
