In this video, we’re in Liangshan, in southern Sichuan Province. It’s a region largely inhabited by the Yi people and, for a long time, has been one of the poorest areas in China.
We visited a village perched high on a cliff, accessible only by an almost vertical ladder. In the past, schoolchildren had to climb up and down this ladder every day just to get to school.
The hike up was incredibly exhausting and took us at least 2–3 hours. Once we reached the village, we met a lovely local family who welcomed us into their home and showed us what life is like up there.

Back in the day, a lot of Chinese people lived way up in the mountains just to escape bandits and the wars.

I am from Singapore. When I was a student in 1970, my parents would sent money to our relatives in China to help them. Fast forward 56 years, I would witness in my lifetime the rise of China to be the world's second largest economy and for good measure, they even lifted 600 million Chinese from poverty. This is an incredible achievement for China. Way to go!

You should thank the people that built these walkways, can you imagine carrying those heavy steel & equipments up the mountains.

My mother grew up in a rural village in Guangdong province. She immigrated to the US with her family in 1948, after the end of the wars that have devastated the country for years. She was able to return to China for a visit for the first time in 1981. She went back to see her home village. She said the biggest change was that no one was starving anymore.

Those who joked that in the old days they had to walk up the hills to get to school have nothing on the kids at this Cliff Village. 😀

I m also sweating. My grandparents came to Malaya, by boat, in the thirties n my mother married at the age of 13, due to extreme poverty then. When my grandmother ( mother’s mother ) sent her daughter to the jetty, waving goodbye, maybe for the last time, seeing the boat getting smaller n smaller, finally disappearing, just imagine the pain in her heart. However, my grandparents managed to send back money monthly. Whether a cat is black or white, as long it can catch mouse, it’s a good cat. Chinese everywhere. Jia u. ❤ from Malaysia

I'm impressed that the washing machine e made it up to the house. Electricity and water and most probably phone signal too. Just shows how advance China is. Another great video. Thank you very much.

China's miraculous achievements is due not only to the government but to the resilence and tenacity of its people. In order to have education, the children climb such perilous cliffs or mountains just to go to school. Much respect to them all.

@Goal1JoyfulLife 2 weeks ago

Wow you both are fearless and strong to do that climb.

I’m so mad to our schooling system. I’ve almost learned nothing about China. At least I can discover it’s beauty now. Peace ✌🏼

@PCHAN-n3i 2 weeks ago

Oh my goodness!!! They have to climb down again 😨. My stress level shot up just looking at that ladder.

Very interesting, Flo talking about how hard it was for Yan’s parents when they were young, how quickly China has developed in that time. I remember reading John Pilger the great socialist Australian journalist, he had visited China, early nineties, it was such a poor country,the conditions the people were living in. He again visited China just after lockdown, was there for six months, he couldn’t believe the transformation in thirty years, it had become so modern,was just unbelievable. I may not have the dates correct, I’m sure it’s near enough, and approx 30 years. John Pilger died 2023 I think. Unable to contribute this week as I’m in Copenhagen.

I've seen in books the reasons people live in remote areas is security. In the past the harsh economy put people at risk from marauders who would take their food and animals. The remote locations protected people. Second the best land was already taken. Mountain land was free. You are both so fit. Enjoyed thank you all.

Thank you, Yan and Flo for sharing this video, thank you for showing the reality to the world , what China’s accomplishments in improving the lives of the Chinese people, through your personal family lives. Much appreciated Yan and Flo💕

A lot of risk and trouble to go up to the mountain villages using the metal stairs. Kudos to both of you for the remarkable effort and formidable will to visit the villagers.
