SHOW 7 of 8: Justin Peters interviews Pastor and Author Jim Osman on the subject of Spiritual Warfare and Jimâs book: Truth or Territory: A Biblical Approach to Spiritual Warfare. In this episode, Justin and Jim discuss whether Jesusâ authority over the spiritual realm is given to His people. Should we assume that we have the same authority? They also discuss the nature of exorcisms and whether or not Christians are commissioned or commanded to perform them.

Satan is such a liar. We can say all the right words â even seemingly be getting results.. but unless we truly are submitted to Christâ we are being self-deceived.
â Matthew 7:21-23 (NASB) Jesus says, âNot everyone who says to ME, âLORD, LORD,â will enter the KINGDOM OF HEAVEN, but he who does the WILL of MY FATHER who is in HEAVEN will enter. âMANY will say to ME on that DAY, âLORD, LORD, did we not PROPHESY in YOUR NAME, and in YOUR NAME CAST OUT DEMONS, and in YOUR NAME PERFORM MANY MIRACLES?â âAnd then I will declare to them, âI NEVER KNEW you; DEPART from ME, you who PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.â
_______
â RE: CASTING OUT & REBUKING THE DEVIL :In regards to âcasting out demonsâ i.e. ârebuking the devilââ which was practiced by various people in the Gospels and the Book of Actsâsuch as: the disciples as part of Christ's instructions (Matthew 10); others using Christ's name (Mark 9:38); the children of the Pharisees (Luke 11:18-19); Paul (Acts 16); and certain exorcists (Acts 19:11-16).
It appears that the purpose of Jesus' disciples casting out demons (i.e. exorcisms) was to show Christ's dominion over the demons (Luke 10:17) and to verify that the disciples were acting in His name and by His authority. It also revealed their faith or lack of faith (Matthew 17:14-21). It was obvious that this act of casting out demons was important to the ministry of the disciples. However, it is unclear what part casting out demons actually played in the discipleship process.
Interestingly, there seems to be a shift in the latter part of the New Testament regarding demonic warfare. The teaching portions of the New Testament (Romans through Jude) refer to demonic activity, yet do not discuss the actions of casting them out, nor are believers exhorted to do so. We are told to âput on the armorâ to stand against them (Ephesians 6:10-18). We are told to âresist the devilâ (James 4:7), be careful of him (1 Peter 5:8), and not give him room in our lives (Ephesians 4:27). However, we are not told how to cast him or his demons out of others, or that we should even consider doing so.
The book of Ephesians gives clear instructions on how we are to have victory in our lives in the battle against the forces of evil. The FIRST step is placing our faith in Christ (2:8-9), which breaks the rule of âthe prince of the power of the airâ (2:2). We are then to choose, again by God's grace, to put off ungodly habits and to put on godly habits (Eph 4:17-24). This does not involve casting out demons, but rather renewing our minds (Eph 4:23). After several practical instructions on how to obey God as His children, we are reminded that there is a spiritual battle. It is fought with certain armor that allows us to stand againstânot cast outâthe trickery of the demonic world (Eph 6:10). We stand with truth, righteousness, the gospel, faith, salvation, the Word of God, and prayer (Eph 6:10-18).
It appears that as the Word of God was completed, the Christians had more weapons with which to battle the spirit world than the early Christians did. The role of casting out demons was replaced, for the most part, with evangelism and discipleship through the Word of God. Since the methods of spiritual warfare in the New Testament do not involve casting out demons, it is difficult to determine instructions on how to do such a thing. If necessary at all, it seems that it is through exposing the individual to the truth of the Word of God and the name of Jesus Christ. .. also read 2 Cor 10:3-6 [GotQuestions].. â€ïž SO4J-TV
â â BINDING & LOOSING IN THE BIBLE
â What does the Bible mean by binding and loosing? The concept of âbinding and loosingâ is taught in the Bible in Matthew 16:19: âI will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.â In this verse, Jesus is speaking directly to the apostle Peter and indirectly to the other apostles. Jesus' words meant that Peter would have the right to enter the kingdom himself, that he would have general authority symbolized by the possession of the keys, and that preaching the gospel would be the means of opening the kingdom of heaven to all believers and shutting it against unbelievers. The book of Acts shows us this process at work. By his sermon on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:14-40), Peter opened the door of the kingdom for the first time. The expressions âbindâ and âlooseâ were common to Jewish legal phraseology meaning to declare something forbidden or to declare it allowed.
Peter and the other disciples were to continue Christâs work on earth in preaching the gospel and declaring Godâs will to men and they were armed with the same authority as He possessed. In Matthew 18:18, there is also a reference to the binding and loosing in the context of church discipline. The apostles do not usurp Christâs lordship and authority over individual believers and their eternal destiny, but they do exercise the authority to discipline and, if necessary, excommunicate disobedient church members.
Itâs not that the apostles were given the privilege of changing Godâs mind, as if whatever they decided on earth would be duplicated in heaven; rather, they were encouraged that, as they moved forward in their apostolic duties, they would be fulfilling Godâs plan in heaven. When the apostles âboundâ something, or forbade it on earth, they were carrying out the will of God in the matter. When they âloosedâ something, or allowed it on earth, they were likewise fulfilling Godâs eternal plan. In both Matthew 16:19 and 18:18, the syntax of the Greek text makes the meaning clear: âWhatever thou mayest bind upon the earth shall be having been bound in the heavens, and whatever thou mayest loose upon the earth shall be having been loosed in the heavensâ (Matthew 16:19, Youngâs Literal Translation). Or, as the Amplified Bible puts it, âWhatever you bind [forbid, declare to be improper and unlawful] on earth will have [already] been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose [permit, declare lawful] on earth will have [already] been loosed in heaven.â
Jesus taught that the apostles had a special task on earth. Their words of authority, as recorded in the New Testament epistles, reflect Godâs will for the church. When Paul declared an anathema on those who pervert the gospel, then we know that anathema was already declared in heaven (see Galatians 1:8â9).[gotquestions] â€ïž SO4J-TV
