"My approach to music is very deep. I do not compromise with anybody or anything else in the world. I do not care, I don't care if anybody appreciates it or not; I don't care. When I start I always like to play better, nice, good, heavenly music. I want to really go beyond this materialistic world towards Space-there, no compromise. I really want to know-not for the sake of enjoyment, entertainment, no." Maestro Nikhil Dha
This video contains the story of a devotee and his goddess, isolated in an asthami evening of Kolkata crowd, oblivious of the surroundings. No flamboyance, no surprise, devi and her mantras in a sitar. Unique, one of a kind, unsurpassable.
Raga Durga is an offering for worshipping Goddess Durga which is performed at the time of Arati as per Rituals of Scripture . Hence it is entirely a different from those of the appeals chracteristically found in other Ragas of North Indian Classical Music. It requires absolute concentration of a listener to follow the rendition by an Artiste of the standard of Sri Nikhil Banerjee. It is not so easy to bring the real mood inherent in the Raga while it is sung or played .
Truely meditative This raaga is actually fascinating me as Rasika. I have had a wonderful experience with raga when I go through the banks of a famous river,Nila by a passenger train at sun set. truely an experience which cannot explain by words.I was literally searching for maiden( nature)at the banks of river as famous poet P has did in his poems. This raaga and that particular mood experience are inseparable.
Discussants try to conclude (positive or negative) by linking two largely unrelated aspects – 1) Nikhil Banerjee as a sitarist and 2) This particular performance. 1) Whosoever passed negative remarks about his fast gats or taankari, please listen to his Bilaskhani Todi in Baroda, Bageshree in Cologne, Pilu in Stockholme, recordings of Desh, Gaud Sarang, Hamsadwani, Miya Ki Todi, Bhairavi, Malkauns, Maru Behag, Kafi, Yaman, MIya ki Malhar, Megh, Sohini ... I can really keep on and on... I find him the most complete and accomplished sitarist of all time to put my money on, as Vilayat was extremely temperamental and Ravi Shankar in the middle-late years resorted to too much of gimmick! However, it is still unfair and even stupid to compare these artistes against each other as all of them are super geniuses, we are still to find any match for them. I have almost all recordings of Nikhil Banerjee that are available in the public domain now (thanks to youtube!!!) and I am at awe how perfectly he blended gayaki (training with Amir Khan) and Baaz (Baba Alauddin - Maihar gharana). His music is superlative, meditative with deepest purity, clarity and character. 2) About this particular performance, it is probably not one of his best or close to his best, despite still being stellar and extremely deep. Every artiste can and will have a relatively bad day sometime so it is unwise to comment on the ability and evaluation of a lifetime's repertoire / achievements on the basis of just one performance!
I loved the meditative mood - like he is just inside his room and simply playing for himself. What is with everyone's insistence on fast speed ? Just like too much spice has dulled our tongues, looks like there is a similar toll on Indian ears taken through listening to too much 'instant', gallery grade music . Anyway I think Panditji is a musician's musician, or for the subtle layman.
Amazing performance and many kudos to the uploader for this gem. For our other Nikhil admirers, here is a vibrant group to join on facebook : https://www.facebook.com/groups/133243683412616/ I personally invite each one of you to join and enrich the group. Many thanks !
