Mixed Martial Academic

José Aldo “The King of Rio” – from the harsh streets of Manaus' favelas to the longest-reigning UFC Featherweight Champion in history. The raw, untold story of poverty, sacrifice, and devastating leg kicks that forged an all-time great. Scarface is something to behold.

Born in poverty in Manaus, Brazil, with dreams of becoming a professional soccer player, before finding BJJ. Aldo left home at 17, moving alone to Rio de Janeiro with nothing but hope of a better life. Sleeping on gym mats, surviving on shared meals from teammates, he dove headfirst into BJJ and MMA to escape the slums—and the fight game swallowed him whole, eventually becoming the longest reigning UFC Featherweight champion in history, and the King Of Rio.

I am a HUGE Jose Aldo fan.
Dude had the most destructive kickboxing I have ever seen from a guy under 185lbs.
He was more than fast.
He was lightning fast and hit really hard. Heinously hard.
One of my personal favorites.
I hated to see him lose.😢

It's still astonishing how fast and how powerful his leg kicks were. In quite literally a blink of an eye, he could torque his entire body to channel all available power into his shin as it connects with yours.

Fuck that.

The name for this video should of been HEAVY IS THE CROWN 👑

Damn, I missed the premiere. Better late than never, though. I remember Aldo's rise in the WEC, and I knew I was watching the ascent of a potential all-time great. He had that Anderson Silva-esque, unbeatable energy, and he was decimating other high caliber fighters with ease, even after being absorbed into the UFC, where he fought and beat the very best in his division for years. When Jose got KOd by McGregor in 13 seconds, he could have easily gone the Cody Garbrandt route and never performed to his potential again after the loss of his invincible aura, but remained elite for many more years despite that devastating loss. It was an honor and a privilege to have watched the vast majority of his career, and I'm extremely excited to see the Academic dive into the career of one of the best to ever step into the Octagon.

@18:13 Jose’s face after being honored with the ufc title without a fight is my expression when I get nail clippers as a Christmas gift

Thank you for making this video. Finally, someone recognising the eternal greatness of José Junior Aldo, the KING of Rio! Hands down one of the top 5 GOATs in UFC 🐐👑

@itsarecession1 9 months ago

If you watched this man live when he was in his prime, it was astonishing. And even as an old man, he still did unimaginably well vs the likes of some like Petr Yan or Merab. He's one of the GOATs, no question about it.

Great vid mate, people forget how great aldo was because of Connor, but realistically aldo is the goat by far

Astonishing story, all the more so for being relatively untrodden despite Aldo's massive fame. Props to Mixed Martial Academic for going 'off diary' with this one & releasing when there's a dearth of MMA content.

Fantastic video on Jose Aldo Jr.
Fabulously covers not only the carrier of a legend fighting the best of the best in 2 divisions but also his opponents, and where they were in their carriers when they fought him.

Aldo's celebration in the crowd in Brazil is still the best celebration ever.

39:31 honestly looked a lot like dana was doing more to keep Aldo from grabbing his belt back rather than settle things down

Aldo is the reason I started watching smaller guys and WEC. He was the Fedor of the little dudes. An absolute monster. Nobody had leg kicks like Aldo. 9 title defenses speak for themselves!
