POV of Whrilwind at Knoebels - October 2000 (60FPS)

Sean Flaharty

Take a quick ride on Whilwind, the defunct Vekoma split-corkscrew that used to operate at Knoebels amusement park. The coaster was removed to make way for the very unique Flying Turns bobsled coaster.

This video contains a separate audio commentary track. A faint reference track of the original audio can be slightly heard in the background.

Fun fact: you can actually still ride this coaster. After it got removed from Knoebels in 2004, it got sent over to Costa Rica's only amusement park, the "Parque de Diversiones Dr. Roberto Ortiz Brenes." It's been renamed to Bocaraca, and now has a venomous snake theming now with bright blue and yellow colors.

Granted, it's still a pretty tame ride, but it's an interesting piece of trivia nonetheless. As a Costa Rican who's gone on Bocaraca many times, I had no idea about this coasters' history as "Whirlwind."

The sound of the lift will never be forgotten. You could hear the motor on that lift through the entire park. Brings back memories.

im so happy this video was randomly in my recommendations Ive always had this vague memory of another steel coaster (not impulse) being at knoebels where flying turns is now but was so little I couldnt remember anything else about it to try and look it up. Drove me crazy for almost two decades trying to figure out if it was a false memory or not

We have a simmilar Vekoma here in Brazil, but it's going to be soon removed in order to free the spot for a B&M Dive Machine

Oh the HORROR!!! (Was that me with you?)

👍I feel this was the only mistake Knoebels had made in their history. Replacing the Jet Star coaster with this used split corkscrew from Rye Playland in NY. But having Flying Turns replace it was one of their best moves behind relocating the Rocket (Phoenix) coaster in 1985.

A Classic Vekoma Corkscrew model! Where were other models of this coaster built?
