We have already examined a broad range of UFO encounters reported at locations all across the globe. This week however, we will be focussing on a series of sightings which allegedly took place within the Soviet Union. Stories in which the Soviet government had been repeatedly forced to confront and evaluate the existence of potentially unearthly enemies of the state.

You say: The majority of the UFO sightings were documented in the US. But as a Hungarian, I would like to break the silence. One of my ex-collegues told me one of his experiences, when he was a conscript in the People's Army of Hungary back in the Warsaw Pact era. He were patrolling at one of our military airstrips at a moonless night (maybe in Kecskemét, but I'm not sure), when a very bright, elliptical object has fallen on the sky, hovering over some MiG-21. He became frightened, but when some of the passengers (small slender figures with relatibely big head compared to their small size) of that... THING, he was panicked, and ran back to the guard's booth. He was signed a contract he will not speak about the incident to anyone - but still, he could. The People's Army of Hungary became obsolete, so he could break the silence. He told his story in a hungarian UFO magazine years later.

There are what I would describe as "quite a lot" of UFO incidents in the former USSR during the 80's and 90's. The magazine WIRED did an article on close encounters with Russian naval vessels.

As a Russian I'd like to point out that the Voronezh incident contains such a vast amount of well recognisable tropes and stereotypes from the Soviet science fiction media of the 1960s to early 1980s (well prior to the incident) that to me it immediately felt like one giant inside-joke. I'm not contesting anything but take every story of this nature with a pinch of salt.

I remember the Voronezh incident being an item on the national news here in the UK. It was one of those 'And finally..' light hearted sections but they added that TASS, the Russian News agency, had maintained it wasn't a hoax. Whatever it was, I also recall that the story was even more chilliing with the trio taking an indiscreet and unchallenged walk around an urban area. They were accompanied by a giant robot that witnesses reported was occasionally looking into second floor windows. Brrr.

Being pulled despite brakes, and speeding up as they go, makes it sound like modern roller coasters using magnetism.

There's a story about strange ancient objects deep in Syberia. They are called syberian cauldrons by the local tribes. It would be a really good story

Can we all just take a moment to stop and appreciate that somebody pulled down an extraterrestrial spacecraft with a Soviet-era shoulder launched explosive. That is *impressive*.

Wishing well to everyone in Ukraine & Russia(n civilians)

I think that if the Russians would use a surface to air missile on a UFO, they most certainly would immediately fire upon such strange looking beings.

Wish you’d done a segment on the jellyfish or Petrozavodsk ufo incident in Russia. That was a very bizarre case and again had a lot of witnesses

“Enemies of the state”, in other words, citizens

Man, those second set of aliens were jacked. They clearly have a good gym on the mothership.

Why do the Aliens always have such ripped abs and pecs in these things?

@HalfLifeExpert1 4 years ago

Those aliens in the Voronezh incident bear a strong resemblance to the Dark Ones from the Metro 2033 series.......

For anyone interested in more UFO and general paranormal cases from ex-USSR and Russia. There's the channel "Paranormal Research Paul Stonehill" that specifically specializes in these cases

@lostinpa-dadenduro7555 4 years ago

Have you noticed that first they were reported as airships in the 1800s, then in the 50s they looked like Art Deco hubcaps, then the Bob Lazar type saucer, and now black triangles. Do these things alter their appearance based on our expectation of what we think they should look like?

The Somerset and Dorset Railway 7F operating in Russia was an interesting plot twist. :P

@tommargarites2811 4 years ago

That was great! Would be nice to hear of more such stories from places one rarely hears from. ( not just Russia)

After having witnessed a UFO while at sea off the coast of Oregon it has definately a certain effect on you. Almost 20 years have past since then, and it still remains a fresh memory.

I actually recall hearing about the incident regarding the 9 ft tall aliens who landed in Russia and who made some on-looking kid vanish in to thin air for a brief moment of time. Funny thing was though, was that I read about it through our "Weekly Readers" while still in elementary school at the time.
