The Narina Trogon is one of the trophy sightings for birders in southern Africa.

These shy birds are normally heard and not seen as they sit very still in the forest and are difficult to spot.

In this video I show you three different methods for calling a Narina Trogon when you are out on foot.

I've used these same methods on dozens of occasions and have had incredible results. In one instance we were able to see 4 separate sightings on the same day.

As with any skill like this, you should not use this technique to harass or distress the bird you are calling. You should only use these calls if you are in an area where a Narina Trogon is already present, and only use it to get a sighting, not to continuously get the bird come come back over and over again.

In this video I also get a nice surprise when a real Narina Trogon comes closer during my demonstration.

I hope you enjoy the video, and I hope you'll give these techniques a try next time you;re in the forest.

And if you're an African birding enthusiast, be sure to get one of these excellent bird guide books (we have all 3 :))
